Where people want to visit and where it is reasonable to visit are two different deals. Now I have been to France and I love it, but I don't think it would be number 1 for any other reason than smaller size and proximity within Europe.Comment

If you are taking the fairy from the UK to the mainland the nearest choice is France and because if you want to get to a lot of other countries you tend to drive through France. Now, add on having Paris, Disneyland, wine and the Rivera and they have it good for visitor numbers.Comment

There are... or were... some amazing chateau's for sale - complete with original fittings, courtyard and stables etc. Asking prices were stupid cos the French seem to have the tendency to head for cities. The US probably doesn't get that many visits because its not really central to any population. You can come from Canada (sparsely populated) or Mexico (poor can't afford it). Everyone else is in for a long ass airplane ride.
