It's probably because they know so many people will see the movie they put a lot of money on marketing. If you know the movie will cover production and marketing costs no matter, then every extra visitor you will get from marketing will be a lot of profit, they know they will never loose money so they can risk investing money in marketing. $700M without marketing or $900M with $100M marketing, I know what I would do. I've been a Simpsons fan since I was in high school when the show first came on. I never even knew what Matt Groening looked like till he popped up on the Daily Show, I find it kinda funny they are parading him around all of a sudden after being such a recluse. They also skinned myspace, skinned Tom profile, made crop circles with Homer, appointed a town as the real Springfield, and pulled like a million other publicity stunts.
