I know of multiple people/companies spending alot of money to lock down patents on various widely used technologies.
I see alot of companies with a fair amount of money, switching to patents as a business plan...with the economy in the state its in and the bottom falling out of the mainstream so quickly that alot of those companies are claiming patents on everything down to the dot as seb said.
I predict alot of similar instances occuring concerning many of the seemingly inane web based technologies we employ on a day to day basis.
I know Hoax. Just like those clowns with the streaming content bullshit. The worst part of all this is what it costs to defend yourself against these clowns.
I happen to be (against my will) a customer of SBC and this doe NOT SURPRISE ME. Anyone with the misfortune of having to deal with these monkeys knows what I am talking about.
I really hope that someone in Washington pulls their head out of their ass and realizes what is going on with internet technology patents. A lot of these patents were actually created by other people but these big companies were the first one to file the patent so they get to take credit for the creation. This is pretty bad for the growth of the internet. How long until AT&T or Lucent or Apple claims a patent on http or www ?

Nah, Al Gore owns the patent on the www and he's not suing anyone yet

yes, SBC doesn't know their ass from a hole in the ground!!
I have a friend who owns a computer store and holds a patent on a certain kind of Java and JavaScript navigation menu/content retrieval system. He filed the patent for the purpose of suing MSN, though, not the general public. I think the story is that Microsoft.com put up a menu system similar to one my friend had been using for ages and then tried to strong-arm him into taking it off his own sites. I wonder how that worked out.
