I'm not sure about the state they are in, it varies.
Some states have specific crimes for knowingly being HIV+ and having sex without notifying your partner. They carry VERY strong sentences.
Other states don't have such laws.
I am not at ALL justifying what this asshole did, but you do have to keep in mind, that everyone knows having unprotected sex carries significant possibility of disease. So anyone engaging in that type of reckless behavior is putting themselves at risk. In states that have refused to enact harsh laws, that's been the rational.
Unfortunately, this guy was only 17, awfully young to learn such an important lesson the hard way, and exactly why I'm such a big advocate for proper sex-ed. |
