 Shawarma are Middle Eastern and gyros are Greek.
Gyros are served in a Greek pita that is usually lightly oiled and fried.  They are typically garnished with tomatoes, onions and tzatziki.  The meat is usually pork or lamb.
A shawarma is served in a pocket pita and is usually garnished with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickled turnips and hummus and/or garlic mayo.  The meat is usually lamb, beef and lamb or chicken.
The meats for each are seasoned differently.
And no, you didn't say they were the same, but WG asked about shawarmas and you referred him to a gyros place.
