Online viewers boost Playboy income
Adult entertainment company Playboy Enterprises has cut its losses thanks to the increased popularity of its website.
Online revenues, which almost doubled, and licensing sales offset falls in the Chicago-based company's entertainment and publishing divisions.
For 2003, Playboy said it expected online operations to report a profit, while publishing profits would be flat, and television operations lose money.
The website made a loss of $284,000 in the last three months of the financial year, compared with a $5.1m loss in the same period last year, but revenue growth was strong.
Excluding a $6.6m in one-off charges in the quarter, Playboy reported an operating profit of $83,000 for the quarter, compared with a loss of $5.1m a year earlier.
For 2003, Playboy said it expected to see operating profits nearly double over 2002.Comment

LOS ANGELES, Dec 9 (Reuters) - Adult entertainment company Playboy Enterprises Inc. (NYSE:PLA - News) said on Tuesday it expects to return to per-share profitability in 2004 because of strength in its online, television and publishing operations.
In a statement, Chicago-based Playboy said it expected its 2004 operating income to reach $30 million, a 20 percent increase over this year's anticipated operating income. The company sees its revenues rising 5 percent.
"Looking at 2004, we expect to see increased profitability in our publishing, online and entertainment operations as well as in our core licensing business," Chief Executive Christie Hefner said in prepared remarks to be delivered at a Credit Suisse First Boston investor conference in New York.
Company officials were not immediately available to elaborate on the outlook.
Playboy, the publisher of Playboy magazine, spent heavily in the late 1990s and early 2000s to build a business on the Web, but only late last year did the company start showing profits online. Its momentum continued in 2003 as it boosted the level of Internet subscribers and sold Playboy apparel and other merchandise online.
Publishing had been deemed a mature business for Playboy with the level of subscribers at the magazine founded by Hugh Hefner, the current CEO's father, leveling off at around 3.2 million.
In the past year under new editor James Kaminsky, who had worked at rival magazine Maxim, the editorial focus has been retooled with more fashion and lifestyle features. A recent audit of newsstand sales showed Playboy's rising 5 percent while rivals lost readers, Christie Hefner told Reuters in November. The 50th anniversary edition of the magazine, weighing in at 300 pages, went on sale late last month.
Finally, Playboy has consolidated 15 international TV networks into its existing operations, which has boosted the company's entertainment segment income this year while its domestic TV operations have weakened amid a slowed rollout of digital TV networks by cable TV system operators.
The result is that Playboy's widely held Class B shares have more than doubled since this spring from a low of $7.92 on March 5 to a closing price on Tuesday of $16.30, up 11 cents, on the New York Stock Exchange.Comment
