Istanbul, Turkey (Pics)

Every Thanksgiving I try to get away and go to somewhere interesting. This year, I chose Istanbul, Turkey. I cashed in my miles and we got a bed and breakfast (overall very cheap experience).

The city is gorgeous, although it did snow and rain quite a bit while we were there. The food was excellent and the people were great as well. One thing to note, airports in the middle east do not take travel lightly. At the Istanbul airport, we were searched (bags and body) on 5 different occasions before boarding; one would think it could be streamlined, but hey, we got home safely and that is all that matters.

Here are some pictures.......

Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque is easily one of the most prominent landmarks in Istanbul, as well as the world. Our Hotel was located within about 100 feet of it, making the morning Islamic call for prayer a loud experience. All the Mosque tend to compete for sound space when it comes to calling out to Islam 5 times a day, I would say the Blue Mosque was the most equipped in regards to loud-speakers.

Constructed in 1609 by Sultan Ahmet.

The Church of Hagia Sophia

Built in 537 (rebuilt later after an earthquake in the same century).

This structure is phenomenal, breathtaking and captivating to say the least.

Cats of Istanbul

All I can say is that there are cats everywhere. There were more cats per square block in Istanbul than any animal in any city per square mile of any other city I have traveled in. There was even a cat in our hotel room. Sometimes cats would just crawl up in my lap in hotel lobbies.

I am an animal lover, so it didn't bother me at all.

Topkapi Istanbul

An old ottoman palace that now places host to a museum of ancient ottoman artifacts, among other things. They have the second or third largest diamond in the world ( I would have taken a picture, but the crowds surrounding it made it nearly impossible). Lots of old artifacts from the chinese traded on silk road. Many of the items (if not most) were returned to Istanbul after WW1.

The premises played host to the Ottoman sultans up until the 1800s. Very impressive.

Hookahs Istanbul

Many bars offer you the traditional turkish hookah experience. I smoked the apple-banana-cherry stuff, or something like that. Very old tradition passed onto them by the persians and is still very alive today with the culture (both young and old).

Pigeons Islam

Pigeons are more or less covetted by Islam, as they were originally considered a friend to the prophet. They are everywhere. They were being fed in front of this mosque, where muslim women were handing out bird feed to anyone that would take it.

Grand Bazaar

Large mall with lamps, hookahs and jewelry. I was over it in about 5 minutes when I realized everyone was selling the same items using the same english sale's pitches.

Galata Tower

One of the higher points known for spectacular views.

Expose it correctly and shoot during the right times of the day. More times than not people go out at 2:00pm and shoot pictures and then wonder why the pics don't really pop....

I desaturated blue in the vegatable stand pic to bring out the produce more.

I also suggest a slight bump in the "unsharpen mask" in photoshop. Canon by default sets the 20D at a soft sharpen (this suggest they would rather have the bump take place in Adobe). You can turn it up in the camera settings however, if you like.

What is next on the list world traveler?

I would love to go back during the summer time. We did a lot there, pretty satisfying.

I intend to turn it up a bit next year with my travel list. Maybe something a bit more rogue, like Africa. The problem is expense, that continent cost a pretty penny to travel to.

Otherwise, we are looking at the Phillipines (where Erm is from) or Israel.

Oh and in regards to the Asia post, Istanbul is located in both Asia and Europe ( I believe it is the only city of such geography).

The asian side of Istanbul is anticlimactic however; at least my opinion...but I probably just didn't find the right stuff.
