Na.. seriously - it's not some fantasy rubbish and not talking about imagined disorders or schizophrenia. These are, varying, but diagnosed cases of MPD and the trauma cause is known - child assault. Tho it can be other than child assault - basically starting from a traumatic experience.
I only know a few of these people well enough to know the real background/history - and it's not a palatible history and impossible to deny. During treatment, it's possible to evoke personalities, but they may not wish to talk to a doc - he's an adult (or a "big person" in child lingo) and the personalities exist to protect the victim
But.. over time information comes out and it's possible to extract the appox years during which the assaults took place. The victims (in normal mode) usually know of the assaults - the personalities kick in during a time needed to block out or protect.
There are MPD victims within law enforcement, sometimes attached to child protection units, and they understand what is going on. These officers are more than capable of doing a good job despite their baggage and a couple I know of spend extra time off the job assisting victim support orgs.
One amusing incident was when one of these officers was getting professional help. After a session with a doc, the doc asks - "Did you know you wrote a paper on forensics which is rated very highly?" *lol* The officer had no clue of this tho was educated along criminal justice lines. This was the first time and years later that it was known there was cred to something that was written a few decades previously. I had a chat with that officer and asked about this - replies "Pfft! So I'm an academic next - what do I know?" *lol*
Seriously - it's not some fake crap - it's very serious, but can have it's funny moments.
