i went through a similar decision in 2003 when i bought my C4S. it was between the C4S and the SL500. the cars are night and day... the SL is all about luxury, the 911 is much more of a sports car. handling-wise, there is no comparison. i'm thinking about buying the new 997 turbo as soon as it's available.we'll miss you our friend. S class looks fine.. tuned by brabus i'll drive it 4 sure.. but the fact that mercedes puts in everykind of electronic shit in those S and SL classes makes it delicately for errors and bugs.. and that in a car..
design is also not my kind of style (SL)..
believe me.. porsche's car are worth the money and won't produce computer errors and that bullshit. it's for drivers who like the feeling to drive a damn car.. and not to be driven in a luxury thing ;)

I drive a Carerra now but my favorite car of all time was a Carerra 4 cabriolet.. and the day that I picked it out, It was between that and the Mercedes you're looking at. Good luck making your choice! Mine was easy, my wife told me once many years ago before we were married and when we were poor that the Porsche was her dream car. lol

Lars I am in the exact same position as you with the exact same choices.
I test drove both and feel the Mercedes is a much nicer ride, with the hard top option living in CA you gotta go with the Mercedes.
Plus you already have had a Porsche for a bunch of years, time to try something new.
The 2006 Mercedes SL 500 look so fucking sweet in person and drive even sweeter, hands down the Mercedes.Comment
