No one replied to my idea. I know women and even men also who become widows/widowers especially with young children can collect social security survivor benefits.
Does Canada have anything like that at all?
yes...not sure how the fact that it was a suicide affetcs her eligibility though.

I don't know if they do. I've been looking all day for ways to help her, trust me. We are heading to the Welfare office in a few minutes as soon as my girlfriend get home so she can watch her kids for a bit. We will ask....
Elvis just tossed me a link. So I will be looking into that for her as well.
I hope she can get them! I personally know a MAN who lost his wife and got social security survivor benefits and you get extra for the kids too. His wife's income was a big part of their livelihood too so it really really helped them out.
I hope she can get it even though it was a suicide that is SO not her fault. It would be wrong to deny her.
I respect you for helping her..that is more than most people would do. A lot of people would just turn their head and look the other way.

Yeah that's the major question. I have been through a loss like that before. Granted I was a lot younger, but I saw what my mother and her whole family went through. So, it kinda hits home.
Ecksent said there's already a Paypal account set up. I must've missed it in the thread. Anyone know it?
We're short ourselves this Christmas, but we'd like to send a bit to a fellow Canadian in need. Its not like she's a pornstar who fell off her horse. This situation sounds like it has genuine merit.

Hey Silent I do have a Paypal. [email protected] I do appericate anything you can do. Thank you.
Surely there are organizations in your area to help. Also, you could encourage a local tv station or newspaper to do a special interest story on her...with her permission of course.

My best wishes to her and her kids.
Yes trust me man. I have been on the phone all day with people trying to get her some help. We just got back from the Welfare office. They will "take a look at her application" and "see what they can do." What a bunch of garbage! So, who knows what will happen there.
its cool youre doing this, although its the families' own fault. Western countries have jobs, birth control pills, etc. Its their fault they let it end up like this. Anyway gluck with it.

It's the family's own fault the head of the family. the sole bread winner, went off and took his own life?? Hmmmm. I know I'd want my wife to stay home and raise my kids, since I can make ends meet by myself. It's not HER fault. Yes it is the most selfish thing a person can do taking their own life. I understand that. But she didn't ask for it to happen.
Ecksent, to my knowledge, other than a food bank, she won't be getting any 'welfare' money until her case is looked into - which means, she'll need his death certificate (could take another week to get the official one), she'll need bank statements for the past 2 years (in case they were/are hiding money) <-- that can take the bank another month to pull out. Before any welfare or widow/child benefit pensions are received, it will take at least 2-3 months & that's being optimistic considering there will be holidays and everyone's on slow-mo.
Anyhow, don't know if you have epassporte - if you do, I'd like to send something. Best of luck to her - keep reminding her she has to be strong for her kids.
I don't have Epassporte. If you get a hold of Elvis from eariler posts, he has one and will be delivering the money directly to me in person. Thanks so much for your help.
Alright guys, I know most of you don't know me, but I encountered a VERY bad thing yesterday evening.
Coming home from buying clothes and toys for my girlfriend's office's Christmas family they sponsor every year, I saw my next door neighbor (who live in a basement sutie) crying. I put my things inside and came over to see if ther was anything I could do. She replied "bring my husband back."
Turns out (after talking to her for the whole night) her husband and her were having some money problems, as most people do at some point. He decided to take his entire paycheck and take it to the casino. I assume he didn't win anything, since he drove his car to a remote place and ended his life.
This women has no car now (as it is in police custody as evidence). She has 3 children under the age of 10, and 0 income. I personally went to the grocery store this morning and filled her cabinets and fridge to the tune of $300.
If there is any way you could find a way to help this woman out for the holiday season, it would be greatly appericated. I would love to Help take the edge off by giving her a check in her time of need. She has no money in the bank, and no collateral for a loan of anything. She is going to file for welfare until she can find a job, but that could take up to two weeks for a first appointment.
Please let me know if you can help out. I do have PayPal, and 100% of the money will go to her. I know most of you have a heart out there, so please let's help this woman out.
Ecks

Try getting hold of your local MPP, explain the situation fully...and see if they can interject and help speed up the process a little. With elections just around the corner, you might find them a little more willing to do whatever it takes to help out a constituent.

Sent it through paypal - I won't be around much and I don't want it to slip my mind.
I feel bad for the kids the most. Sad that they have to deal with the loss of a parent. Even greater sad that the loss was by suicide & that will have almost a permanent scar on these kids emotionally as the children may suffer wondering things such as "Why did daddy leave us" & there will be times when they wonder why he didnt love them enough to stay alive.
This family is going to be in great need of grief counseling, particularly the children. Christmas is around the corner & these kids are going to be so damn sad thinking about christmas past when their dad was around.
I'd like to send the kids some toys.
Where can I send them, or should I icq you or elvis?
She is going to get help from the goverment when it comes to services for her late husband. Though police are still investigating the situation, turns out he never owned a gun, so they are trying to find out whether this was a suicide or a murder.
If you still want to help, please contact me via ICQ or email.

If this kind of thing was acceptible on boards, I'm sure we'd see plenty of "Please Help" threads along with the Paypal email.. There's simply no way to verify the validity of this and if you are naive enough to send money to some random person's paypal email, then this will not be the first time you will be taken advantage of during these holidays
You want to help? Those of you living in a city, next time you go downtown, don't give a beggar money, they will only most likely go and buy alcohol and drugs..Instead take them to go get a hot meal, and pay for a night or two at a motel... That's my two

Thanks to Phoenix and everyone else that helped out.
My ICQ is being retarted (go figure). Just wanted to personally thank you for hooking up with Mike and arranging things. We talked for a bit about the situation and connected on a personal level. Thank you again.
