To avoid being copied and pasted into some assholes email spam program would be really the only reason I could think of. The theory is if they have to work for it they will skip you. Dont think it works really but most folks do it just to add that extra step.

the spammers run bots to harvest email addys.
the bla at bal.com makes it a little harder for them.
