Advice on New York/ Manhattan hotels

In two weeks I'm going to New York / Manhattan with my family for two days, after that I fly to Las Vegas, but I need a 2 day stop with the little ones.
I need some advice on what hotel to reserve a room at. Preferably a suite, I'm coming over with my wife and my 2 kids (7 and 6 years old). I don't know much about NY and I don't want to end up in gang town with the kids if you know what I mean.

Any advice on a decent family friendly hotel ?

    Thanks

    B.

Check Craigslist for vacation rentals, you can often find a good deal on an actual apartment. I went a few months ago and rented a 1br in the East Village for $120 a night, right above my favorite bar, too.

With family I would stay out of Times Square if possible. Waay downtown or close to Central park are better options.

My first choice would be the Parker Meridian. It's one of my favorites even without taking family into the consideration. Top notch. It's on the legendary 57th St. which puts you right off of Central Park and it also puts the wife a block away from 5th avenue shopping with Louie, Gucci, Tiffanys and all. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing. A lot of damage can be done in 2 days. ;) The Jr. Suite is bigger than most Manhattan full suites but doesn't close all the way.

The Waldorf Astoria (not the tower) is a great choice for families. It's a few blocks from Times Square and it's a legendary hotel that the wife will have fun bragging to her mom that she stayed there. You'd look like the man even though it will only run you about $400 bucks for the suite.

Embassy Suites in Battery park. It's in a nice area that's close to The World Trade Center site, Wall Street and Soho shopping. It's the cheapest, nicest suite you will find in Manhattan.

The Westin on 8th avenue is very nice. It's on 43rd st which is one block away from everything in the square but it's a bit quieter than most of the other hotels in the area. If you must do a hotel in Times Square this is the one.
I've trusted my sites to them for over a decade...

                Webair, bitches.

I stayed at the Westin last year on a biz trip. It was very nice.
