Some people are so terrified of the word socialism they can't even see what is staring them right in the face. Your medical system is fucked and private enterprise cant fix it. Why? because private enterprise isn't about protecting citizens, its all about making a buck. At least we get to vote for the government. If one lot fuck it up then you vote in another lot to take another shot at it. The right-wingers try to dredge up 'horror stories' about socialised medicine but the reality is, by and large, those in countries that have it, love it. Liberals and conservatives. Its rare you find something that almost everyone in a country agrees with. Socialised medicine is one of those things.
Why people trust private enterprise more than the government staggers me sometimes. You dont vote for the leaders of big business. The average person has no say in the affairs of the corporate world. But they have a vote. They can help change a government. No system is perfect but one of the purposes of government is to protect its citizens. Having healthcare available to all is the very basis of that, as well as equal opportunity. How can any country claim to have equal opportunity when an education and health care is not provided to ALL its citizens?
In short: They can't.
