These aren't fortune cookie philosophies, they're true. Even the saying, "Fortune favours the bold," implies action on your part.
But sure, sometimes success is a matter of being at the right place at the right time. If it's pure luck that's keeping these people along, just know (or if you're petty, be glad) that lucky streaks can't last forever.
Also, perhaps a lot of the people they're gloating to are not impressed and are also sick of them.
