Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire----A Quick Review

Let me start off by saying I have never read a Harry Potter book, and I didn't think the first 3 movies were anywhere near the class of, say, the LOTR trilogy, yet I enjoyed them for what they were.

This last one, however, "the Goblet of Fire," was terrific; it alone was better than the first three Harry Potter movies combined. Its quite dark and mature in tone, and the storytelling elements are top notch. Don't miss this one. And if you are a big HP fan, you've probably seen it already.

All I know is that this one was pretty damn impressive. I was expecting to see a HP movie about the same level as the last three, but this one was just so much better. Like I said, if I had to quantify it, this last one was better than the previous three combined.

I went and saw it on the Imax today.

I'm in the same boat. Haven't read the books, but have listened to a few of them on the computer and my iPod.

This movie was the best of the bunch, though I'm told that there was a lot more left out of this one compared to the others. So now I might have to catch up on my listening or actually read them all...as I do own copies.

Great to hear! Thanks for the review. The fourth book is probably the best for a screenplay. You've got the magical tournament with lots of cool action and a host of fresh characters, and the resurrection subplot which ties in nicely.

The 5th and 6th books get a bit long winded. They'll have to cut lots out.

I loved it and I haven't read any of the books, and I thought the first 3 HP movies were just OK to good. This one was really good. Great storytelling.

I took my son and two of his friends on opening day for his birthday. We all loved it

It was definitely darker and more mature in content than the others in the series. It's something a child under 10 would get nightmares from.

must say it was indeed impressive...this is so far the best movie among the four they've made so far.Though they've missed some good points there, it was still superb!

Yeah, they had to trim down some of the excess from the books. There were entire scenes and dialogues in the book that had to go by the wayside... it was just too long, and the books what came after are longer still.

So in the future we can expect more 'trimming', or a longer feature which risks alienating viewers (although if the LOTR trilogy is any indication, people WILL sit in a theatre for 3 hours if the story is good enough!)

I started another thread, comparing the popularity of Harry Potter vs. Star Wars. You may find the results quite surprising:

I wrote in it:

Domestically, that means North America, I think Star Wars wins hands down. However, world-wide? Harry Potter wins over Star Wars, and wins big. The numbers bear me out. First off, the HP books have sold over 300 million worldwide.........Star Wars novels don't even register a blip and aren't even worth mentioning, sales-wise.

Now, the movies........

Star Wars again wins domestically, but loses worldwide. I took the Top 3 Star Wars movies of all time, worldwide box office, and they are "Phantom Menace", "Revenge of the Sith", and "A New Hope." "A New Hope" also includes the re-release of Star Wars with the digital effects in it, in which ppl. flocked to see because back then, digital effects and CGI were in vogue and new. Now, its routine. However, they add up to $2.548 Billion. Those are the top 3 of the 6 Star Wars movies. And one cannot argue that the numbers are skewed due to inflation. I counter that simply by saying back in the late 70's and 80's, so few movies were released by studios due to the infancy of the home video movement, that the competition for the movie dollar was a joke compared to now. Movie numbers now, despite inflation, are more impressive due to the rabid competition and sheer numbers of titles to contend with. Thats why what Titanic achieved was so incredible.

So we have the Top 3 Star Wars movies at: $2.548 Billion worldwide.

The first 3 Harry Potter movies are at: $2.643 Billion worldwide. And trust me, this last one, Goblet of Fire, may be even higher grossing than the first three, or will at least place second of the 4 made. That, along with record book sales, leads me to conclude Harry Potter is more popular than Star Wars has ever been on a world-wide scale. But in N. America I still think Star Wars is more popular.

The thing I like is that the special effects SERVE the story and don't overpower it. The story and characters are still the overwhelming focus of Goblet of Fire. That means the director did his job properly.

Apparently, the goblet of fire opened up as the #4 top grossing week OF ALL TIME. Over $100mil in the first three days domestically, and over $180mil worldwide.

Not bad. I don't know what the other top 3 are, but it's a pretty rarified list by any measure. Probably Titanic and ET and some such.

I personally found the movie very boring. Where was the action? The dragon scene was the only time things were moving at all. I guess if I was a big Harry Potter fan, it would have been better. I'll stick with LOTR and Star Wars.

I totally agree. The statistic I quoted (from seeing it on tv, damned if I can find a citation online anywhere) was from all time best opening week, as in the amount it earned in the first seven days. The numbers you're citing are overall revenue... of which I'm sure that, eventually, goblet of fire will occupy a high place, if not the highest.

It'll have earned the place it achieves, imo. Great film, and a very worthy adaptation from the book, even if it did have to trim down some of the more colorful but non-plot-advancing bits.

I know there's a lot of webmasters on here who are Star Wars fanatics and don't want to hear it, but Star Wars ranks third for series popularity worldwide after Lord of the Rings and then Harry Potter. The numbers do not lie. LOTR and HP are just more cosmopolitan and appeal to broader ranges of people, and thus pull in bigger numbers worldwide than SW.
