Joomla is like phpadsnew... You can put content into different categories and have it popup in designated areas of the website. You could do the same with wordpress but it wasn't designed to perform that way.

wordpress is about as simple as you can get to run any size blog you want

joomla is a bit more complicated and can run anything from a blog to a full on monster like cnn.com (no, they don't run joomla, just giving an example)

If you are dealing with actual content... go Joomla...

i have a non-adult news type project in mind that will be content based that i think this might work well for, and from a designers standpoint it's probably something worth at leats taking a look at. was just curious what people thought of it, i hadn't heard too much...

there's a few seo plugins for joomla and you can do some pretty easy .htaccess mods.

i run www.xxxis.net off it, but there isn't much going on there

I am working on another site right now that will be a full web 2.0 portal for the burning man community in the southeast...it will have user created blog, interactive forums, flash galleries, etc....all run from joomla
