RSS: Dead feeds galore

There have been a whole bunch of programs announce RSS feeds in the last little while. I think some of these programs don't realize that RSS feeds are like a garden: You have to spend a little time regularly to keep it going.

Best one for May: Mac and Bumble. Brand new feed, and for 3 days they had a new entry every day. After that, nothing. Nada. Zip. Two weeks later, not a thing.

I have one splog working on feeds from cam sites with models and whatnot. I hadn't checked it closely, I went over and found out that none of them were updating their feeds anymore... last entry for any of them was 3 weeks ago.

*sigh*.

Update: Just got an email from Brad as Video Secrets, they had a programming issue that was resolved and their feeds are back up - one of the better daily camgirl feeds IMHO, actual workable text and all. Thanks for the fix Brad!

The picture is a lot worse than you painted. I have over 150 feeds listed on a page in my sig but Monday, when I wanted to use some for a new site - no special niche, just decent quality, fair-sized pics and text for a blog, regularly updated - I ended up with SIX. Okay, so maybe I'm picky, but even to work with as few as that, I had to do things like setting line-heights to zero on empty lines and forcing new lines after pics, so a couple didn't look like crap on the page. I still ended up with warnings about invalid but hopefully - for most surfers at least - viewable code.

I don't agree with but can understand, people who don't produce RSS feeds, but what on earth is the point of bothering with them at all if you make affiliates jump through hoops to get the links and after all that, the feeds are rubbish?

The M&B feed is updating, but the feed isn't being served correctly - so autobloggerpro is ignoring the updates because I guess it doesn't parse.

it serves as text/html, which is wrong, and the coding of the character set line is wrong which causes the rest of the feed to be invalid (and extra ? in that line, I think).

So there are updates I can see on a feed reader, but ABP and feedwordress both puke out on it.

I gotta agree too: The copyright 2002 on the images is pretty bad... Is there no M&B content newer than that they can use?

This seems to be WAY too common.. Most feeds seem to launch with some good shit but then are dying off faster then anything.. Even alot of the bigger programs are doing this and it kinda blows..

That's why we hand write ours at least every other day. A lot of sponsors rushed to get their RSS out because it was a buzzword on the boards but didn't bother to wrap thier heads around the concept first.

More examples: Paul Markham (apparently static, never updated), Anna Sucks from Real Sex Cash (didn't update for months, both other feeds are fine), Perfect Gonzo (very sporadic updates).

Loads of others do 2 updates a month max. Pretty sad, since they are missing alot of traffic this way.

Most of them are slapped together shit. And they never seem compatible with each other in style and all that. Needs to be some industry standard sizes and layouts set.

How many of those are actually blogs and how many are just standalone feeds? Maybe you could add that info to your list as I'm looking for more blogs with feeds like twistys, mpbabes etc.

Alot start out making a big deal about having them and how great they are and some are decent to start.. They just do not seem to be lasting in most cases INCLUDING some big ones and regular posters on here...

I announced the CamSpot Cash feed was back up and it's still updating and will continue to do so. Im surprised at how few people get on board with a good updating feed since it's so little work to pop in and let it roll. You can look at it, its still going.

This is true. One piece of advice on your feeds, using flash movies can be a real pain, because most aggregation software doesn't handle that very well. At bare minimum all your declarations for the movie should be made with full URLs, no relative links.

OCCash feeds update regularly, which makes them a rarity in this business.

We appreciate you giving us a heads up on this. They are still being updated daily; the issue was that there was an unescaped "&" symbol that killed the feed parsing. The data was still there, just that a strict parsing application would choke on it.
