check your power supply, i went thru 4 160 gig drives in a year thinking it was maxtors deal, replaced the power supply and haven't had problems since.
Owning hundreds upon hundreds of hard drives I have to say they all suck now. The only really good SATA drive is a WD Raptor. In general, Seagate is the exception as we've had the least amount of drive failures with that brand.

Had a 60gb Maxtor die on me a few years back. Replaced it with two 80gb western digitals. Luckily managed to get one more boot from the Maxtor to mirror it before it became a door stopper.
