It started well before Harper and in fact he's had shit all to do with it.. It's been the US war in Iraq almost exclusively and to some extent the reduction of the deficit by the liberals over the last 10+ years.
If you look at the exchange rate graph, from the day Bush announced they were going to war in Iraq, the exchange rate started to drop. As the war has continued and the US economy has grown worse etc., the war has brought on the demand for oil from other places, like Alberta.. Which has improved our economy... So we've been double hit with our economy improving and theirs going down... Fuck me....Comment

You're partly right. Remember however that you live in BC which isn't the "real world" for Canadians. You need to be in Ont or QC to know what's really going on in Canada. hehehe..
Harper is doing a great job with Canada/Quebec relations, which in turn eventually creates an atmosphere of confident spending, driving the economy in the right direction. Couple that with some nice Paul Martin economics from the past and Geo W blowing the American bank and you have a strong Canadian dollar.Comment

As for anything else "Harper" related, it depends. Being he doesn't have the full reins, anything he "claims" he's done has to be looked at in terms of how much he's had to compromise and which of the other groups have had their say as well. Quite frankly, I'd almost prefer that we allways have minority governments.. It makes them work together which is what government should be IMO.Comment

I had to bump this thread because Today it once again surpassed Its previous mark when this original post was put up! Today it hit 94.59 U.S. cents, and economists are predicting that by as early as next year that it will be trading at par with the US Dollar & even surpass at 1.04 in 2 years, I heard this on the news today. Looks like alot of people are going to be losing money in this industry and possibly jobs if the dollar keeps rising...

Yup... run away... par is about a week away, depends how quickly the bank of canada raises interest rates. .25% more and the canadian dollar will equal or pass the US dollar.
