SEO question - recips and non-recips

When exchanging links, what is better, recips and non-recips?
Recips are easily seen by SEs as a trade between 2 sites, can they be interpreted in the future (after an eventual big update) as a way to artificially inflate your PR and SE ranking, and therefore be penalized?
$9.95/month for 15000 GB bandwidth monthly, unlimited (sub)domains and MySQL5, PHP4/5, 500 GB disk storage! ; use any of these invitation codes: 216263692101; 408636009193; 846090586647; my ICQ 30160426!

Bless you Brother Money. If they are on distinct hosts it shouldn't be a problem at all.

On a side note do you think Mickey Mouse is Homo? I mean him, and Minnie have been together a long time, yet he still blushes when they kiss. Also it's telling that there are no mini Mickey's around. I personally think Goofy, and Mickey are homosexual lovers. Will this hurt attendance at the many wonderful Disney Theme parks?

NON-recips, and link to/from similar theme sites/pages only.

Be careful to whom you link - linking to 'bad neighbourhoods' can be bad news to your rankings.

The difficulty with linking (if SERPs are on your mind), is that the only way you will know if someone you link to is still a 'good neighbourhood' is by monitoring all the sites you link to.

If sites are relevant and linking is balanced (you don't only link to sites that link to you) it's all good.

non-recip links are better. that surely shouldn't dissuade you from trading links though.

Yes, you can be penalized for having too many links, too quickly, whether with recips or not.

However, if you have a choice between recip or not, non-recip is better.
