    hard drives--which one(s)?

    My requirements are:

    500GB external.
Must have USB 2.0 (iMac G4 connect)
Must have Firewire 400 (Sony Vaio laptop connect)
    Must be under $225

eSATA interface seems like it's a pain in the ass and I don't need its transfer speed so I'm not sure if I would get that since I don't think my Mac can work it.

So far, I've looked at LaCie and Western Digital. I'm open to other suggestions and welcome all comments.

    Thanks,
    JP

You might be better off getting a HD case that fits 4 drives, can get 250gb-320gb drives super cheap, and use RAID so only one of the 4 drives is used to repair with if needbe.. So with 4 320gb drives you'd get a TB of functional space without fear of losing all that data.

500gb is a lot to trust to one drive.

When it comes to Hard Drives, I'm a devout Western Digital man.

In all my time, I've only had one crap out on me... and that was after 15 years of continual use.

Hmmmmm, this is interesting. I haven't thought of it but it makes sense. I'll have a look around Newegg and see what prices are to package this up. What brands would you recommend?

Ummm, do I actually have to know what I am doing to put it all together when I get it? I don't know the first thing about hardware.

I'm not a hardware guy at all. If I went the Seagate route, I could buy an existing Seagate external, but if I bough an internal, is it fairly simple to set up the Seagate internal with an external enclosure?
