My dad gave me a pocket knife when I was 8 I believe. He kept it at the top of his closet, and I was only allowed to use it when he gave it to me, generally when we went camping. He kept it safe, and I knew that if I was good during the week I might get to use it on the weekend with my dad.
I'm all for a 10yo boy to have a knife, but these days YOU need to keep it locked up until you go on your trip.SharkyComment

i say tell him that he can have it for camping trips etc and that it is HIS knife but do not allow him to have it all of the time. maybe let him know that you are storing it in a safe place for him. my main concern would be that he could show it to another kid who might steal it, do something naughty with it and ultimately leave you responsible since you were the access point for said knife.

put your foot down mike - every kid 10 to 12 gets a pocketknife - its one of the many rites of passage of being a kid and the dynamic of the father son relationship.I maybe wrong on this one but my intention was good and I'm sticking to my guns. My son is 10 and we are going camping in 2 weeks. I carry a pocket knife all the time and i thought he could handle the responsibility of having his own for the trip. I gave him a little pocket knife (i dulled it a bit
) and sat with him and had a long talk about the dangers of the knife and when and what to use it for. He keeps it in a safe place and cannot take it out of the house unless i say he can. just fishing and camping ..stuff like that.
I kinda forgot to clear this with the wife and she had a fit when she found out. she wanted me to take it away and i said no i think he can handle it and every boy should have a pocket knife at some point . taking it away now would make me look bad and make him feel like she doesn't trust him.
I know i should have talked to her first but am i wrong for letting him have one at 10. she also gets pissed when i let him target shoot with an airsoft gun (while I'm there) I don't see the harm in that either.
What do you guys think? do i need to buy her a gift ..
fuck the gift on this oneLast edited by jonesy; 05-11-2007, 03:47 PM..

And as far as not telling her - well, you probably should have...
But liken it to her going out and getting a daughter's ear's pierced, or some other mother/daughter bonding thing...
It's not something you'd _expect_ to be brought in on.... and you just weren't thinking.
I mean, the knife's a tool... would you think of cluing her in on buying the kid a ratchet?-D.

I think your right .. i didn't think of that. I didn't really dull it down much. it's just not razor sharp like mine. it can still cut rope pretty easy and stuff like that.
After reading a few of these replies i decided to Move the storage place of the knife to the closet of the office. it's on the middle shelf and he can reach it if he wanted but it's not as easy as in his room on the top shelf. he understands that he can't take it without asking me and he's cool with it being in my office. I told him it's not that i don't trust him but I'm worried about a friend taking it or his little brother getting in his room (not that he could reach it but you never know .. they find ways) my office is locked at most times unless I'm in there and he didn't feel like i took it away from him.
As for the wife i showed her this thread and she seems better about it. atleast she doesn't think I'm insane ..

..She's over reacting..if the boy fucks up with it then take it away

I think that is perfectly fine, as long as he uses it for those purposes only, and doesn't end up taking it to school or something like that. Trust him with it until he proves you wrong (if he proves you wrong). I think you made a smart decision though.Comment

Also,
Personally when I think I was around 11 or 12 I collected cool looking knives out of those magazines. I ended up having like 50 different knives, some were like 2 feet in length, and I also had real throwing stars, throwing knives, and every kind of cool colector knife that was around. This was when I was 11 or 12 years old I think. I never really did anything wrong with them, I just liked to show them off to friends when they came over to the house. Although, I did end up stabbing and killing both our dogs a few months after I got these knives, but that is a whole different story

yep, me too...
I don't think you did anything wrong... IMO it's far better to teach them that sort of responsiblity early before they start playing around with those things with their friends in secret... Get in early before they get a skewed "cool" viewpoint.Comment

Keep believing it dude.
I'm not pussywhipped. I ramble ... sure... but I'm not pussywhipped
hehe
I WAS pussywhipped ... when I was married. But I soon fucking sorted that and left the bitch.
I'd still be single if life with a woman always meant pussywhipped

i got to have my own .22 at 10 - under dad's supervison.
owned SEVERAL knives by that point.
unless the kid is a moron he can handle it. taking a knife away from him if he shows responsibility at that age in my mind would be a bad parent.

I just had a conversation with my wife about this.
She grew up in Humbolt County, CA on a farm and I grew up in Brooklyn in the street. I always figured 9 or 10 was the right age - she said she was 10 when her dad gave her a pocket knife and a bb gun. I was about the same age.
The talk you had with your boy and laying out guidelines was good parenting obviously. It's all about responsibility ... and it's a big one for a boy to learn.
Sounds like your wife is ok with it after the fact but that's definitely a mutual parenting decision, IMHO.Comment

Your talk with him was the key. You were teaching him.. not leaving him to his own devices. Props to you. Did the same with my boy.ICQ: 370 037 008Comment
