    *** what are your thoughts about NLP? ***

    heard about it like 5 days ago, bought some book yesterday

    just did a brief search on GFY and I see some people say some books on NLP changed their lifes.... isnt that too much hype about that?

    for those who don't know:

    Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a personal development system developed in the early 1970s by Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder, in association with Gregory Bateson. It uses a toolbox of strategies, axioms and beliefs about human communication, perception and subjective experience.

    NLP's core idea is that an individual's thoughts, gestures and words interact to create one's perception of the world. By changing one's outlook, a person can improve his attitudes and actions. These observations can be changed by applying a variety of techniques...

              If that's the general idea it sounds like a sound theory.

              It gives me some negative associations though like the trying very hard to change one's perspective which then usually comes down to applying to one's deeper, blindly order-following and compliant, unconscious by screaming very hard and repeating orders etc. At least that's what it looks like when you see that Dutch guy work it.

              I think in a philosophic way I can develop a total inner peace, openness to everything and a happy state, I don't feel attracted to methods like NLP.

                      I think NLP is not (only) about your own inner peace, it's about better communication with others and achieving desired states or actions of other people

                      anyway, I only started reading that book, so I guess I should have started this thread after finishing reading it

                          I have done some NLP training in a sales context. It does work, and on the personal development side can be a powerful tool for people to improve themselves to a certain point.

                          What I don't agree with is the way that some people teach it. There are individuals who have set themselves up as gurus, and charge shitloads for conferences etc, when really its a quite simple concept to grasp. Business is business but they are ripping off the vulnerable to a certain extent.

                                              After becoming familiar with the material I changed many of my old beliefs and several books on NLP/hypnosis/evolution later, I know exactly what I want and how I plan to get there. Sounds corny but that was a huge thing for me, the material helped me improve my personality tremendously. Toronto is one of the centres for NLP training, I'm planning on taking the courses this fall.

                                              In particular NLP helps with communication and rapport. Have you ever had this thing where you didn't know what to say and felt uncomfortable (especially with women)? There's ways to get around that. It teaches you to gain rapport easier, to extract information from people, how to argue better, how to impose your beliefs on others, etc. The best thing is that it's based on what works.

                                              Which book are you reading? I found "Introducing NLP" by Joseph O'Connor to be the best intro to the subject.
