But liken it to her going out and getting a daughter's ear's pierced, or some other mother/daughter bonding thing...
It's not something you'd _expect_ to be brought in on.... and you just weren't thinking.
I mean, the knife's a tool... would you think of cluing her in on buying the kid a ratchet?
