I think it's so difficult now because bands are often just the flavor of the month. In many ways after the singles stop coming they are forgotten about until the next album.
There are a ton of bands breaking into the spotlight for a short period of time rather than a handful of bands hogging it. So we don't really have the music icons anymore.
