Best way to swap computers?

Whats the best way to take everything from my old computer and put it on my new one?

I have alot of software that I've purchased and stuff like that, I want to move it all to my new machine.

Anyone know the best way to do this?

LAN either a x-over cable or a hub will do the trick.

now as for swapping the computer...

simply toss the old one out the window as the delivery guy brings the new one in the door haha.

Get your software off the boot drive (or the boot partition), toss it in the new machine. Make sure drive letters remained the same (for the software-bearing drive), upload software registry keys. some programs will have to be reinstalled, if they have hardware particulars. this is just for software, not settings.

hmm, well putting a new hard drive in a computer doesn't make it work, different motherboards would definatly constitute a new install of the os.

but i've never tried putting the old hd in the new comp and upgrading or fixing the os...

anyone know if this is works?

settings can be crossed over too if I remember right... and I am sure you know how to import your identities (assuming you use outlook)

I actually have, but very rare... I have had so many people argue with me, but I WAS THERE! haha... depends on the swap I guess.

yeah, I can see it working and it might be a good try

I changed out my motherboard a few months ago and went to a SATA hard drive or i would have tried it.

Azus P4P800 to a Azus P5P800

now i need a good 2u server case...anyone selling?

I was running win2k and I got a new computer running winxp, I used this: move me, http://www.spearit.com/products.html

Every program was copied intact and in full working order and I use a LOT of programs, the only thing that didnt copy was my outlook express mail settings and the email messages themselves.

my current machine is three years old and has alot of software I've purchased and downloaded from the net, who knows where the original installation files or registration codes are, and I'm damn sure not buying all this stuff a 2nd time.

yep, done it couple of times, I think the repair did'n work though, just had to install XP in a different directory, but it didn't give me any problems after that

He meant the network with the "move me" software.. it took an hour and a half but I'm on my new machine now and so far its just like my old machine except alot faster

DUMBASS.

That won't do shit. The Windows OS will detect diffren't motherboard/bios/config/bootsettings and all kinds of DRAMA with the new PC.

the only chance you have it swaping the HD with a new pc and setting it as slave setting the HD in the other PC as master (if it's not on by default) then in the bios make sure it detects MAster => then slave =>.

I just use my network to copy things over. You could always stick the HD in the new computer and copy the files over that way.

Thank you very much for that, ive been putting off buying a new laptop for this very reason and now i cna move all my programs, TIME TO PURCHASE A NEW ONE
