As you guys know I run a bunch of adult sites.. I want to offer other formats as opposed to just the 700kbps WMV.

    WHat do you guys suggest...

    Realmedia id assume is oldschool..

    mpg? mov or wmv?

i see most sites offer wmv and mov

    then others wmv and mpg.

    poll time :D

also what encoding settings should i use as im redoing alot ;)

answering as a geek, here are some things to consider when dealing with file encoding:

there are two major choices to make when deciding what kind of encoding to use: container and codec. a container is the way the file is written out, the codec is the way the content is encoded. the file extension (avi, mpg) refers to the container. you cant put just any codec in any container, but you can mix and match to enough of a degree to cause trouble if you arent careful.

avi, mpg and mov are containers. therefore, you could produce files that no one would be able to play if you used an exotic codec. mpg1, mpg2, divx are all widely supported codecs. personally i dont like any of the wmv because they tend to have spotty or no support on other OSes and non-microsoft players.

the way i generally approach this problem is to take a few reference files, encode them in a variety of formats, then play them in a variety of players on multiple OSes. evaluate for size, picture and support.

now that ive thoroughly confused the matter, i would recommend trying TMPGEnc. it is one of the best, slickest mpg encoders out there. it even has settings files that you can download freely that take alot of the guesswork out of getting good results.

I,m about to convert my old and new Hi8 and DV tapes into something i can use for my future website and affiliate sites.
I'm getting a new Pentium 4 - 3.2 G system set up to grab my tapes and burn dvd's so i can send them to AEBN and Hotmovies and the likes.
I'm told to encode in AVI or Mpeg 2.
Is TMPGEnc. what i need ?
I only need to put put some sequences together so maybe if i have TMPGEnc. , i really dont need an editing program.
Lookin forward to hear from you Porncaster.

Tmpgec DVD source Creator is an encoder that encodes to mpeg2 with the ultimaye goal of DVD creation ( or VCD or SVCD). There is a small edit function, mainly to cut out, crop etc...
            The output quality is great.

TMPGE DVD author, will create the DVD from the above mpeg2 files. Same little edit interface.

TMPGEnc 3.0 Express is better suited for you. You can create WMV, AVI, Mpeg1, Mpeg2, and so on.
It has prefixed filters, and also the editing interface.

            the progs are at: http://www.pegasys-inc.com

For editing, a good one is Vegas Video, but you could use some cheaper software such as Pinnacle Studio.

.mov files definetly will have the best sound of this world :D but just about 6% of your user can watch them immediately, all the others hae to install the plugin for the qucik time player first.
In my opinion wmv is the best, if you like get some sample trailers I have made in wmv her: http://www.greatsexcontent.dk/?Products:Videos Let me know what do you think

But i'm a newbie at this and still a little confused about this.
My new system comes with an Avid editing suite....or is it Final Cut.
Is there an encoder in the edit prg, or do i need to tell my computer guy to install an Mpeg 2 encoder like TMPGEnc 3.0 Express ?

you should definiately not use mpg1. that was the _first_ standard video for computers, and is now an antique. the only thing its really used for now is to create VCDs for people that dont have DVD burners. however, i see new mpg1 encoded content going up all the time.

mpg2 is what is used for dvd and hdtv. it is still serviceable for videos like porn because from the codecs point of view, things dont change much from frame to frame; except maybe in some of the wilder orgies. given half a chance, i would dump it for something newer.

as for mov, the format is good enough, but the quicktime player, which is what will most often open an mov file on a windows box, is junk. playback is jerky, the interface sucks and there is no playlist. having no playlist makes porn watching much less fun. if that wasnt bad enough, the latest version of quicktime player wants you to buy an upgrade to do just about anything with it; you cant even watch things full screen.

Servhot: keep in mind there is more than one wmv codec. there is wmv1 (Windows Media 7), wmv2 (Windows Media 8), wmv3 (Windows Media 9). it looks like your using wm3, so your stuff looks good. wmv3 is a great codec, but beware, because the others are antiques. in terms of support for the codec, and last time i checked, microsofts own media player for Mac didnt support wmv files. expect playback to be problematic on non-microsoft software.

amateurcanada: you did mention that youre thinking about attracting new customers. maybe you could be the one to blaze a trail and use the latest mpeg-4 hotness, h.264. imagine offering your customer full screen, better-than-hdtv quality video in a _smaller_ file. im a real believer in the future of h.264, and the faster people roll it out, the faster we can all live happily ever after.

pimpmastercw: since you are going to pull some raw camcorder video, you are in a perfect position to do some reference videos. on editing, mpgs were never made to be edited or spliced together once written out. there are many tools, including TMPGEnc, that will splice files, but expect problems with playback.

ive just looked back over what ive written, and i swear i didnt start out to write an article on video. my bottom line is:

                        mpg1, wmv1, wmv2 - dont use them
mpg2 - lowest common denominator, but good enough
wmv3 - good codec, expect bad support on non-microsoft anything
divx in avi - great quality, cross platform support

                        test, test, test!

Ok my man tells me that Avid is installed and it can do mpeg 2, avi and stuff.
I'll try and do some ref dvd's on my old party and holiday tapes and see what's best for me.
But for porn submittal, i quess mpeg 2 is still the thing to do.

i cant run avid as im not on OSX or WinXP, or i would throw out some helpful hints on getting good output.

you could save 25% in size, with better quality, over mpg by using divx/avi, so the decision is basically: is the extra bandwidth worth making sure that absolutely everyone will be able to play it without adding codecs.

We just ditched the Avid and getting the new Pinnacle studio 10 installed, as it can copy from camera to dvd without saving to harddisk first.
It does digital and analog encoding.
I need that for my old tapes whitch i'm not gonna edit....just gonna do a digital copy and backup of each tape.

Regarding whitch format to choose for the porn tapes , I quess pornfreaks dont mind getting codecs if it improves the output....i know i dont mind.
If you say divx/avi is a better quality than mpeg for viewing and smaller in file size, i'll try and make some refs in studio 10 and compare to mpeg before i burn my dvd's.

I'll let you know how its going.

But yesterday we tried and grab some DV and Video 8 in Nvidia.
My tech allready had a Nvidia bundle laying around, so we tried that, and it looked allright to me...not having the time to go deep
Anyhow if i was to have a copy of SD 10 software from you, i would still need the grabbing card for my analog camera, and Nvidia had that too.

Quality looks good so far and it can even record direct to DVD...or it says so.
Havent tried burning dvd's yet though and i'm keen on seeing the final product on a normal DVD player.

Any comparisons between Pinnacle and Nvidia ?

It's autumn in Denmark and still sunny days and warm weather.

Finally i got my system set up.
It's a cube E-bot pentium 4. 3.2 giga with adobe premiere and Nvidea Ulead studio 7 for grabbing old composite tapes.
It's got G Force FX graphics too.....is that good ?
Funny stuff is that Premiere cant record direct to dvd and Nvidia can....what's up with that ?

We're sitting here editing some very hardcore stuff that we recorded 1 month ago.
Ha ha.....already i need more harddrive than the 200 G i have in there, cause i have 3 more film to edit.

Is it true that it takes like 3 hours to render an mpeg 2 from 1 hour AVI ?

                                        Happy Christmas and GFY
