Ahyup, same thing was going on here. People in Winnipeg were circulating an email that said "Don't buy gas from Shell stations. Fill up anywhere but Shell"
The thinking was that Shell would have to eventually lower their prices, which would then cause the other stations to lower theirs, resulting in a gas war.
I've seen it passed around maybe 3 or 4 times in the past 6 years or so.
