I can only imagine what it's like in Europe. Cars there tend to be much smaller on average and Europe is having the same problems with Obesity that America is having.

This reminds me of one time in Auto Shop in high school.

Students and teachers brought cars in for free service.

One main office secretary brought her Ford Escort in because it was scraping when she made left turns.

She dropped the car off with us before class started and left the keys.

The teacher had already looked at it during his free period before our class. He had evaluated the problem and wanted to see who in the class could diagnose the issue.

The class came out to the lift and was given the owner's statement. "Car scrapes and dips hard to the left on left turns."

The teacher asked us for our opinions or possible diagnosises before we started to look for possible problems.

The typical responses were.

1) Bad shocks. nope
2) Bad springs. possibly
3) Other broken steering or suspension component
4) Bad bushings
5) Loose brake component.

The teacher said, "You're all wrong."

He said, "Yes, there's some excessive wear on the drivers side tires from scraping but do you know why?"

Someone yelled out, "That fatass that's driving it weighs too much?"

BINGO.

The owner of the car was easily in the mid to high 400lbs. BIG WOMAN. The car did have some normal wear and tear but under normal driving conditions it would have been okay. The car dips hard because she's got the weight of the car so off balance.

Solutions.

Tell customer to lose weight.
Use stiffer springs.

I suspect the size of the monthly grocery bill is also inversly related to the size of the monthly car payments.

I'm 6'3 200lb, and drove a Miata for a year... There's actually way more interior room than a lot of bigger cars, they designed the car well.
