I heard it's illegal to drink alcohol in public places, like in parks or just on the streets, but I also heard if you hide what you are drinking, like with a bag or something, then it's fine. Is this true?

Yes it's illegal, no hiding it makes no difference because you're still drinking in public.. -

Technically its illegal to drink in public places - but unless your behaving like a drunken asshole and making a spectacle...the cops will either turn a blind eye or give you a warning.
Also depends on the cop...
...and depends where you are in Canada. It ain't the same everywhere you go.

Illegal, yes, but you just have to be smart about it, and discreet. Slip one of those "Coke" or "Pepsi" can coolers around your canned beer and no one will bug you.
Sit out in the open on the beach or at the park guzzling booze openly and yeah, you're begging for a hot nightstick injection.
Btw, licensed restaurants with outdoor patios are also "in public" yet it is perfectly legal to drink there. You're outside, you're among the public.... what's the difference? It's not legal but it's somewhat tolerated if you are discreet(If you are doing your tourist that is screaming everywhere while drinking... good luck). You need a bag over your beer. I got caught a few times in the summer downtown during the festivals and they usually tell you to just drop it in the garbage bin or to empty it.
If you are discreet you can even drink in your car while driving(not recommended unless you are a moran) but I've seen it done plenty of times.
