There's a few points you failed to address in your figure of $5000 to get started.
1. Attorney fees - Retaining an Attorney is just smart. They will set you up with all of the paperwork needed to keep your business, in business.
2. Location fees - Unless you're shooting at your own studio, money will have to be spent on a location, be it a hotel room or an actual studio.
3. Labor - We shoot with two HD Video Cameras and pull stills from the video itself. I'm good but not good enough to operate two handhelds at the same time. Gotta pay someone to operate the other. I also have a paid assistant on hand to take care of the smaller details.
4. Misc - Something ALWAYS comes up. New bulbs, backdrops, props, model demands more money...the list goes on.
I don't disagree that there's money to be made shooting exclusive content. I just question if $5000.00 is enough for a 1st timer. The real money rolls in after you get your initial investment back. Once you have 10-20 shoots under your belt, the rest is cake.
