I think the difference is, comedians say things within a joke and are known for their act, so when people go to see them they know what to expect. Plus.. comedians don't direct dark comments at anyone specifically as a rule.
Imus has been known to say some pretty rough things about specific people as he was known for that. Nothing was done about it, so all has been well. it's just this time he went too far. I think mostly because these gals were just young students/athletes trying to do good and he slammed them pretty hard.
Then of course the media went wild with it; bringing it to the world's attention causing even more of a backlash to the point of advertisers pulling their ads. Then the inevitable happened...
There have always been double standards within the two races... Ya have the Negro college fund, black whatever month, black this or that... Where if there were a suggestion to have a white college fund, or white whatever, there would be screams of racism..Comment

They didn't tell him he can't say those things, they just told him he can't say those things on their channel. There is a freedom of speech.
