    Observation: Mainstream vs. Adult

Mainstream supposed 'experts' seem to be overly concerned with Web 2.0.

I hear it over, and over and over..

Actually that sounds a lot like adult - once a week or so we get a "sky is falling" thread going down.

That's true. A lot of chicken little's out there in adult.

But when I listen to some of these "guru's" for mainstream, they are mentioning web 2.0 over and again like it's around the corner. Don't get me wrong. I know it's something on the radar, but my God..

Another thing I find humorous is how they (not all, but many) look down on adult and say it's, "easy".

Oh,.. and let's not even get to the mainstream message board Nazi's.

That is my greatest obstacle. I have been banned by so many mainstream boards within hours of joining, even when I go out of my way to be nice.

              I hear you.

I was on D.P. and was asking about mobile. Being new it was ignored, and dropped like a stone. I bumped the thread, and was warned a week after bumping it I was in the wrong.

              LOL

If it's against the rules, so be it. Just overly anal. I can't recall a board like that, but whatever.

Web 2.0 mainly has to do with the infrastructure by the servers, but more importantly XHTML, and getting everyone on properly coded HTML so shit shows up correctly on mobile devices.

People tend to refer to "web 2.0" by one, or the other, or both.

Regardless, you are talking about YEARS if ever getting everyone on HTML 3.0 or XHTML over time. Mainly those who need to cater to mobile will be those who adapt.

Yep. If people think the rules here are bad, they should go try and get some help on mainstream boards. If you last a week with some of the GFY tactics, I'd be surprised.

But plenty talk about how the weak go to adult where it's "so easy" by comparison.

I go out of my way to be out of character on mainstream boards, and even want to purchase advertising, but they all have 50 moderators and all little Hitlers.

Don't even dare to question someone . . . or if you make a comment that is anti-Clinton or Obama forget it.

I typically stay away from religon, and politics. Especially when I am dealing with money, and looking for the 'gems' you occasionally find on boards. But the mini Hitler's run a tight regime in the ultimate of 'good ole boy' networks.

People like ShoeMoney are considered god, and there are a handful of others that are like Moses. Almost everyone else, especially anyone from adult, is looked down on.

But to listen to (some) of these web wizards talk you would think they are all Al Gore Jr.

Stuff like web 2.0 and IPv6 and BPL and other great supposed technological leaps were suppose to already be here now making our internet lives better. They aren't they won't be for years so I'm not worried about any potential "problems" they may cause.

                                Exactly.

There was a ton of money given to the telco's back in the Clinton years that was supposed to expand the internet into rural areas, and increase the speeds to those you see in Japan, and other countries.

Well good old American corporate greed in it's finest... the telco's took the money, and never delivered.

Then have the NERVE to talk about the tiers system now on the net nuetrality and blah blah.

I got 'interviewed' on a well-known mainstream blog last year. It was surprising to see a few well-known mainstream people came out and say that they had got their start in either adult or warez.

Yeah, there are some who admit it openly, and are proud of it.

Then you have others who hide it because the 'almighty' look down on it because adult is 'easy'...

The other thing that surprised me was the number of people over there who feel that we still have a lot to teach them about marketing.

In some ways we do but in other ways mainstream has gone ahead of us in when it comes to marketing techniques.

                                                I agree.

The porn biz may have revolutionized the web as a new technology, but mainstream is moving it in the next step "monetizing" it every inch of the way.

There is little left out on a site that doesn't have a dollar or cent associated to it.

Mainly those who need to cater to mobile will be those who adapt.

i prefer the idea of an extention for mobile devices more than web 2.0. no matter how properly coded the html is, content and graphic rich sites will never look good on phones. in my opinion on the only way to provide a site that you can actually use on a phone is by having a seperate site altogether for it.

hell, you don't even need to go as far as another extention even, just need some code to detect a mobile browser and redirect to the mobile version of the site.

Regarding the adult biz... I truely believe the internet is what it is today largely due to the adult industry, And this is coming from a mainstream webmaster! After almost a 10 year layoff... I'm getting back into the adult game.

But the fact remains that adult is, and what has, pushed a lot of technology over the years.

I'm not sure how it would be enforced but yeah, it would be a benefit to have sites show up the same in all browers. Though, like you said, in theory.
It really couldn't be. Other than you self motivate if you want to be able to cater to that market.

In essence, the marketplace would force your compliance to remain competitive.
