how old were they? when I was studying I was so broke I had to take a job in a lcoal diner to support my schooling. kids nowadays are used to spoonfeeding and I will not be surprised if they grow up like a bum.Comment

I worry alot about what my kids will be like when they get older. I say to myself that I will teach them work ethic, to value money earned and to have the right coping skills so that when they go out to the working world they are ready.
On the other hand, it is hard not to give your kids things that make them happy if I can easily afford it. Like trips to Disney, more hot wheel cars than they could ever play with and decked out computers to play Lego Star Wars. And my kids are only 4/2. When they get older I am sure I will be dealing with even more expensive toys, designer clothes and then eventually cars. I hope I can address all these things and still have well adjusted kids.
I think one of the hardest things to do will be saying no to my kids in order to "build character", even though I know it will be what is best for them.

Consider this. Say you are worth $500 million. Is there anything wrong with giving your child $20 million in assets so they DON'T have to ever work? What's the big deal about work anyway? Why do you need a work ethic if you are given $10s of millions? Nope, what ya need there are some good lessons on money management and fiscal responsibilty.

I don't agree. If I get a gift I appreciate it and respect it as much if not more than if I worked for it.
It comes down to values. I grew up in a very comfortable home but I also was taught to work and earn at an early age. I was working when I was 12. I was taught how to save and be frugal, so I knew the value of a dollar.
I bought my own cars, but I did get one as a gift from my folks once and I can tell you it was appreciated. I've returned those same favors and have done good things for others in my family. What goes around comes around and if someone knows the value of work, they will appreciate a gift.You deserve to make more money. I'll help you do that.

I guess alot would hinge on whether that child was equipped to handle such a large gift.
