I'm going to Japan this year and looking for some CDs, DVDs, or CD-ROMs... any recommendations?
Learning Japanese?

If you have time to take a college course, do it. Otherwise, go to a local campus bookstore and they should have books/tapes.
Otherwise, you can try Kinokuniya which is Japan's largest bookstore chain.
If there is one near you, then try and visit it - otherwise you can order online.
If you search GFY, there are a few good threads about traveling to, or living in Japan. I lived there five years myself, and visit whenever I have a chance (I'll also be going to Japan this year).

Seriously, the japanese are very nice. If you have the time to learn hiragana and katakana it helps too. Kanji is as frustrating as a motherfucker - but - be thankful that japanese isn't a tonal language, so you can speak it like a robot and be understood :DComment

If you are going this year forget a college course unless it is purely conversational.
Forget Rosetta Stone too as six months of that and all you will be able to say is stuff like "the boy is under the bench" and the dumbass CD has to run the whole time so your laptop batteries will take a beating.
I would go with Pimsleur. Strictly conversational and no reading (at least initially)
They even start right off early on with stuff like "suppose you are sitting next to a Japanese woman on the train and want to begin a conversation"

Konnichiwa!
Just learn the basics in Japs first, don't stress yourself too much with learning materials..you won't get to remember all of them anyway..You'll learn their language faster when you get there. Good luck in entering the world of anime! Post some pics!Comment
