I understand your frustration with people like them, they feel the same way about people like us I would imagine even tho you and I differ on some opinions. In the end debate is a healthy pursuit, even when either side breaks down and attacks based on semi-personal level. Ive been guilty of this myself, but I have firm studied beliefs and whether they are popular in certain arenas or not if someone attacks my beliefs I will fight back, as should everyone.
