A New York art gallery has canceled the exhibition of a chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ after angry Roman Catholic leaders protested.

"We have caused the cancellation of the exhibition and wish to affirm the dignity and responsibility of the hotel in all its affairs," James Knowles, president of the Roger Smith Hotel housing the gallery, said in a statement.

The Easter-season exhibit of a life-size chocolate piece of art representing Jesus Christ, which was scheduled to open on Monday, has been called off after causing controversy among the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights who called for a boycott.

"It's an all-out war on Christianity," said Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights.

"They wouldn't show a depiction of Martin Luther King Jr. with genitals exposed on Martin Luther King Day, and they wouldn't show Mohammed depicted this way during Ramadan. It's always Christians, and the timing is deliberate."

"It's not just the ugliness of the portrayal, but the timing, to choose Holy Week, is astounding."

One of my art directors, a person who coordinated many art exhibits - did an exhibit featuring Mary statues with bullet holes through them, it never made the news.

These people pick and choose the artists they want to silence.

Anyone who supports the removal of art because of religion is not a friend of freedom.

Im not Catholic but I agree it is tasteless to show a nude Jesus figure on a cross during easter, thats pretty offensive. Fletch why should people go out of their way to offend christians but not offend muslims?

what a catholic thing to do.

The hotel and the gallery were overrun Thursday with angry phone calls and e-mails about the exhibit. Semler said the calls included death threats over the work of Cavallaro, who was described as disappointed by the cancellation.

?In this situation, the hotel couldn?t continue to be supportive because of a fear for their own safety,? said Semler. Cavallaro still hoped the sweet sculpture could go on display elsewhere, according to Semler.

so now in this country, you disagree with something, you make death threats - the artwork is removed.

When I heard about his I had to laugh. For me, it is a very artistic way of denouncing the chocolate festival that has replaced the meaning of easter for many.

Sadly, christians in this case have shown that they are about as fucking anal as the muslims, and they got it pulls. Just one more reason to say "fuck'em all".

it makes no sense when I was a kid and Im roman catholic, we had chocolate crosses,praying hands and jesus'es bust(from the shoulders up) I assume those candies haven't gone away.

My mere existence offends Christians at every possible opportunity. I don't even have to say a word to offend them. All they have to do is look at the symbol I wear around my neck and they become disgusted. How do you know they were Christians? Just because you are an American does not make you a Christian. Plenty of people in the USA do not believe in religion.
