I guess that's actually a pretty nifty feature! It's not a replacement, just an add-on to the signup page which makes it more likely for a non-english speaker to sign up.

geo-targetting should be used to generating pricing and billing/payment options, it should never be used to determine what language to show the end user. all modern browsers give the server thier language settings. show the person the ads in the language they want and expect to see.

for instance: i live in austria but i dont speak any german, therefore german language ad's are 100% useless and you lost a potential customer.

use the right tool for the job.

'tis true. Geotargetting is the wrong tool for this job. Content negotiation of this kind can & should be done by detecting the language settings in the user's browser.

Lol - Damn GFY - I'm not sure if that is a dig at my English or not

London is mainly an English speaking city, however there are many areas that have large populations of foreign nationals.

The area I live in for instance is mainly Turkish and Hebrew - down the road we have a lot of North Africans so they speak a lot of French.

Afro-Caribbean areas speak English, but it can still be hard to understand if English isn't your first language.

Most people that live in London will understand if you try to speak English.

In a way we are accustomed to 'bad' English.

Someone's location is not always indicative of the language they prefer to view content. Using someone's geographical location as their language preference is conjecture at best.

no, but he's right - you need to determine language based off the browser language setting, which is passed to the server under HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE

I live in France, yet my OS and browsers are all set to en-gb. I frikken HATE it when I visit sites and get french language, based on geolocation. Even myspace does this shit
