He was not around to many strangers when he was growing up and min pins I have heard are one family dogs.

Tassy, I will make you and Hal a deal - get a pug. Try it out. If you find out it's not what you thought it would be, I will fly out there and get it myself. But I don't think you'll have that problem. If you go through the pug rescue groups, even though they are tough, they do foster them enough to know what their good points and bad points are.

THEY DO SHED LIKE HELL my male at 9 is still not housebroken, but it's a small price to pay for lots and lots of love and laughs

No, he's just stubborn and I'm a pushover (and sometimes forget to pay attention to his subtle hints that needs to go out). He's the smart one and the female is dumber than a stick. He doesn't have too many accidents - maybe once a month - and to be honest, most of the time it's because I haven't paid attention to his subtle hints.

i think that's a common occurence with many small breeds - they become territorial of the arms they're in, almost like it's their little plot of land. cute! thanks for the feedback. =)

hehe, i read your post aloud to Halcyon, he said "we don't vacuum enough as it is..." but i remember when i had dogs last i vacuumed daily. i'm surprised they shed so much, i hadn't heard that about them as a breed before this thread. thanks for the info!! i'll work on this plan, at the very least it might get a peaches to my place!

i agree, peaches - i think it's sort of silly for us, as humans, to expect dogs to "know" to go outside to use their "toilet". dogs typically don't remember the thing you just said to them (this is why the "beating the crap outta them for making a mess in your house" method doesn't work - by the time you've found the pile, the dog has long forgotten his bowel movement.) i think if we want them to live with us we have to make accomodations and/or sacrifices to have a symbiotic relationship, i.e. remembering that every few hours the pup needs to have an outside break, a walk, etc.

A friend of mine used to have a Pug with asthma. The dog would run and run and run then just fall over, couple minutes later he would be fine.

It was pretty funny, I am sure it wasn't good for the dog, but it was a funny ass thing to watch. I am a boxer fan, have always had them and have rescued a few before. Right now we have a Dachshund and a Maltese, and we are fostering a Yellow Lab for a local Lab rescue. My brother in law is breeding his female boxer and is having pups at which time I think I will be getting a young boxer pup.

Dog's are great. You might look into the Dachshund and Maltese breeds too. The Maltese are non-shedding dogs. You just cannot go wrong with a weiner dog like a Dachshund. Only problem with them is their backs, you cannot let them jump because they can injure their spine.

To be honest, I don't get the barking deal. Chopper hardly barks, and when he does, it is because a lot of dogs are barking. But it isn't annoying when he does and I can tell him to stop and he will.

                                                            Chloe is our other dog.

She is a 1/4 chihuaha and 3/4 pug. She barks a little more, she has a lot of energy and is sassy.

For the first two weeks, crate train. They will learn to go to the bathroom outside that way. Chopper only goes inside if it is A) my fault for leaving him inside too long with the door closed or B) he gets upset at us. (that is there way of being spiteful).

Don't listen to fools on this board. Having a dog is good for character. If you guys have any questions, call me. I still have the info on the lady I got Chopper from, she isn't far from you.

thanks so much cory! i agree about dogs being good for your character (soul) - i get so much joy just from seeing a dog happily playing at the beach or being nuzzled safely in a ball near his mommy/daddy. it's the simple stuff that warms my heart. i've had dogs my whole life, i've crate trained and taught voice commands to all of my past pets and never had a problem with barking or housebreaking (except one dog who had an "excitatory piddling" problem when men came into the house if that dog wasn't outside he'd pee himself while he tried to come up and say hello - not the greatest for the unassuming houseguest, but if they met outside after a few minutes, no problems!).

how old is your little one? chi-pug mix sounds interesting, i definitely want to adopt, and i'd prefer a dog who's not likely to be adopted due to age (i.e. not a puppy since puppies are so cute and adoptable!)

and with that, i'm finished begging gfy to help me out, if a pug enters our household though, i promise everyone here will be the first to know!

She survived my toddler years without every even growling at me. Just looking pitifully at my mom to get me away from her. They are very loyal dogs and don't have as many shedding problems. The only things I know that are bad about them are their back and leg joints and they are stubburn little buggers. Maybe that will attract Hal? ^_^

I was walking all three of my dogs just before I left Canada when two pugs came flying out of a yard. The people who owned them had just moved in to neighborhood and were messing around in the backyard with the gate open.

At first I thought it was kind of funny seeing these two little dogs full of piss and vinegar ready to throw down with three Rottweilers. Then I realized what was going to happen. When my dogs turned, one of the other dogs stopped dead in it's tracks, but the second went straight for my 150 pound male dog. Before the collision of them, I kicked the pug with the side of my shoe. Not so much a kick, more like a shuffle board type of push. Knocked the little guy out of my dog's leash range.

Not 5 seconds later I was being screamed at by the owner of these dogs for having "vicious" dogs. I couldn't believe it. My leashed dogs were not the problem. I wasn't sure what to do about it so I figured if it had have been the other way around, what would the other people do? I called the SPCA and made a vicious uncontrolled dog complaint.
