They are a little wary of their Nazi and socialistic past. These days, the Germans are rather liberal when it comes to personal freedoms.

Isn't the US President a Christian Zealot? Are you suggesting that the highest elected officials should all be non-believers?

Of course there is separation of church and state, the party name just resembles what they stand for. Christian Democrats are Democrats with Christian values, there is no requirement of being an actual Christian to participate/run etc.

We have the same kind of parties in NL, our biggest party currently is also the Christian Democrats.

We all believe in something; even, if the belief is that God(s) don't exists.

Atheism is a belief as well.

              I second that
Btw, it's not sure that she'll be our chancellor... both big parties are at something like 34 - 35 % and there are still some votes to be counted.

Yes, there is separation, but the Church is not completely separated from the state. The state is still paying for the church. The complete separation has been reversed after Napoleon was defeated.

did I say that the US was a model of Church/State separation?

and btw.. leaders can be religious.. and lead a country where there's a complete (or nearly complete) separation between religion and politics.. but when your party is called Christian Democrats.. sorry but you cannot claim that there's a complete Church/State separation in that country..

Fuck the assholes who cling onto religon as a sales tool to package themselves for the masses as being something palatible. More likely than not - they are utter hypocritics and probably hiding because they have little to offer.

Governments exist to manage economies, develop and manage infrastructure, collect revenue and pay it out, manage defense, "network" with other nations blah - above all, serve.

The religous beliefs of the "head clerk" in such a scenario are totally irrelevant.

PS.. Yes Germany does have seperation of powers - far more so than in the US, and in line with most nations that claim to have a democracy. They are also not letting past history be ingored and determined to learn from that lesson and not be stupid enough to give full reign to any centralized govt - whether with religous claims or otherwise.
