Russia attemped a nuclear launch against the US in 1968?

I'm reading this book about the sinking of a Russian sub named k-129. This sub sank off the coast of Hawaii in the 1960's and the sinking has never been fully explained. Later the US attempted to raise the submarine using the Glomar Explorer, in which Howard Hughes had a part in.

The sub was a Golf II class submarine able to launch nuclear bombs while submerged at a range of nearly one thousand miles. According to this book, the k-129 was less than 400 miles from Hawaii and was attempting to launch from the surface, making it look it look like a Golf 1 submarine launched. The launch was "reported to have been witnessed by US spy satellites. The reason the Golf II sub was launching from the surface was to make it look like it was a Chinese Golf I submarine.

The entire story of the book claims a small fraction in Russia wanted it to look like China launched a nuke on Hawaii.

Think any of this is remotely possible?

the story about that project is really amazing. howard hughes did not "have a part of it" - he was a cover and the idea was that it was some undersea mining venture. at the same time, howard hughes was declining in health and in the end, just laying around the house in a puddle of his own piss and shit with the CIA trying to keep his health a secret so they could finish trying to raise the sub.

also, did it mention the ICBM that fell out when they tried to raise it? that would be some crazy shit to just watch and wait for the last flash of light you will ever see

According to the book the entire sub was raised, but concealed by the CIA.

And nukes are rather safe from what I've read. Planes have crashed with nukes on board and they don't go off unless they are ready to go off.

                Full of shit.

The raise efforts were real, the "intended launch" is tinfoil hat bullshit. What are you going to read next, the book about how the Pentagon wasn't really hit by a plane on 9/11?

Come on people, use your heads.

as i recall, the sub was broken in 2 pieces and they only raised 1/2 of it.... with russian cruisers circling them. they had to build some pretty crazy hardware. me recollection was that they started to raise it and then some of the arms that were holding it broke and it fell to the bottom right? thats what i remember.

i was watching interviews with the guys who raised it (some of the crew) and they showed the clip of the ICBM sliding out of the tube and dissapearing into the darkness and everyones faces just went blank as everyone knew what it meant. of course its not armed.. but it does not mean its a good thing either.

We recovered a few Russian sailor bodies from the portion that managed to make it to the surface, and Clinton actually presented old movie footage of American personel aboard the Explorer performing some sort of Naval ceremony to honor them to Yeltsin early in his first term as President.

I read books about WWII and the Cold War constantly. I'm not saying I believe in it.

But imagine if it's true...... That's some fucked up shit.

Apparently, The Hunt For Red October was based on a true story as well. I never followed up on how real any of it was supposed to be, anyone read anything about that?

hard to say, but at the height of the Cold War, this could very well have been. i've heard that we came very close during the cuban missile crisis, a lot closer than people realize
