who here has an indoor pool?

if you have one, i have a few questions:

    1) is it worth it?
    2) whats the maintance like
    3) how big of a hike in bills from having one?

the boyfriend & i are house hunting and came across a house that has an indoor pool (nothing big, but definatly can hold a party of 20 people). we liked the idea of having one because Wisconsin has like 8 months of fuckin winter lol and i love to swim.

im trying to find the pic of it on the real estates' website, if i find it, i'll post a pic.

I had one in texas. It was quite easy to keep clean, no leaves or dirt could get in it. But the problem was with the increased humidity it caused. And you will have to run the heater even in summer, because no sunlight will be hitting it to help keep it warm.

did the humidity spread through out the house? or just in pool room and couple rooms by it?

Nice house! And under $500k? In Cali, that home would cost 7 figures.

ya, the price isnt bad for the house, especially in that area. I think the crime rate there is like under 10% lol i'd have to do my research but its about 5-10 miles away from where we live now (same school district & county). great neighboorhood.

All that for just 460k? Boy! Do I feel ripped off! I paid 670k for a 3400 sq ft house w/no pools or anything fancy on 50ftx80ft lot.. that 460k house would definitely be worth much over a mil around here.

Just in the pool room. There was 11 fullsize sliding-glass doors on 2 sides of the room that went to large deck overlooking the lake, but that didnt help the humidity. Running a pool heater and air conditioner (because the warm pool water made the air warm and humid) gets expensive to.

I'll never buy another house with an indoor pool again.

you said you lived in Texas when you had the indoor pool, do you think any of that had to deal with climate down there too?? probably not, but just curious.

what were your average elect. bills like? i'm only paying $120 a month for this place (http://babagirl.com/apartment/), its about 1500 sq feet, 2nd floor (gets hotter up here faster), central air of course.

Well texas is hot and humid anyway. $500 electric bills were normal during summer months, but the house was also 3360sq feet (not counting the pool room) so that also had something to do with it.

just do google for humidty and indoor pool or something like that and do some research. Thats a nice house and a good price, but just be informed before you spend the money.

I'm gonna cry, that house where I live would easily be 5 million.

I paid WAY more than what that house costs for an 800 sq foot 3 bedroom 1950's "summer cottage" with 1/8th of an acre.

                            Ugh... location location location.

where? (800 sq ft is ridiculously small, did you mean 1800 sq ft?)

Ooooh nice house! That would be well over a millon $ here in NY. I imagine the monthly bills on it are quite a bit. Well, at least in NY they would be utilities, insurance etc.

I always wanted an indoor pool, I think they're nice.

I wouldn't do it in Wisconsin - especially places with terrain like most of Waukesha County. It is very rocky and prone to shifts. Couple that with the extreme changes in temperature that our sorry asses are subjected to and you will be forking out money for repairs frequently. My ex-boss' father had a similiar setup in Delafield, but grew tired of having to fix things - so he filled it in and had a game room built instead.

truth is i'm doing research on this now. we live in temperate climate and want to swim all year round.

the worst problem of an uncovered pool is maintenance, and the fact that you need to drain it in the fall. cleaning up leaves and lawn clippings that blow into the water everyday when it is uncovered, etc. outdoor pools just get dirtier, and need more maintenance because of that. usually you will want to heat the water (a little bit) in the summer time to keep it 80-85 degrees. buy your chemicals at home depot.

a pool in wisconsin should be indoor IMO. humidy damage will be the main problem to worry about in your pool house. i would suggest going to an "all glass" type building to take advantage of avail passive solar heating and lower light bill. you need a roof ventilation system to wick away moisture but not lose too much heat.

depending on pool size heating might cost 400-1000/month gas bill so you have to build in every conservation measure you can.

if you are just starting to build you might want to consider a longer "lap" pool which will allow exercise swimming, but hold less water to keep energy costs down. make one end deeper for diving.

                                        check google "swimming pool enclosures".

if you are a serious swimmer you should have an indoor pool. lots of people where i live have pools and only use them 10 times a year. big expense if you don't use it.

I've been up here near Oshkosh for the past few years, but grew up in Crudahy and worked (prior to coming up here) all over the state for a place that was based in Wauwatosa.

the worst problem of an uncovered pool is maintenance, and the fact that you need to drain it in the fall. cleaning up leaves and lawn clippings that blow into the water everyday when it is uncovered, etc. outdoor pools just get dirtier, and need more maintenance because of that. usually you will want to heat the water (a little bit) in the summer time to keep it 80-85 degrees. buy your chemicals at home depot.

a pool in wisconsin should be indoor IMO. humidy damage will be the main problem to worry about in your pool house. i would suggest going to an "all glass" type building to take advantage of avail passive solar heating and lower light bill. you need a roof ventilation system to wick away moisture but not lose too much heat.

depending on pool size heating might cost 400-1000/month gas bill so you have to build in every conservation measure you can.

if you are just starting to build you might want to consider a longer "lap" pool which will allow exercise swimming, but hold less water to keep energy costs down. make one end deeper for diving.

                                                  check google "swimming pool enclosures".

if you are a serious swimmer you should have an indoor pool. lots of people where i live have pools and only use them 10 times a year. big expense if you don't use it.
                                                  wow, thanks for the advice!

I know houses are expensive in Long Island but not that expensive to make this house cost 5 million I'd say more like 1-1.5 mil. C'mon now you could get a waterfront estate 4 acres land 7,500 sq ft home with pool and all top level upgrades for under 4 mil in places like Lloyd Harbor, Cold Spring Harbor, Oyster Bay Cove. 5 million and up may be commercial housing with 10+ acres of land
