Poll: 8 out of 10 people say you shouldn't own an SUV

Maybe they can tell me what type of haircut to get next...or what clothes I should wear too...

Poll: 8 in 10 Want Drivers to Drop SUVs
By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer
Thu Sep 15, 2:58 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Eight in 10 people say it's important for Americans now driving sport utility vehicles to switch to more fuel-efficient vehicles to reduce the nation's dependence on oil, a poll found.

With gas prices hovering around $3 a gallon nationally and the price of natural gas rising sharply, six in 10 said they are not confident President Bush is taking the right approach to solving the nation's energy problems, according to the survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

Given several choices for dealing with energy problems, the public has some clear preferences:

_Almost seven in 10 want the government to establish price controls on gasoline and want more spending on subway, rail and bus systems.

_Just over seven in 10 want to give tax cuts to companies to develop wind, solar and hydrogen energy.

_Just over eight in 10 want higher fuel efficiency required for cars, trucks and SUVs.

_Slightly more than half, 52 percent, favor giving tax cuts to energy companies to explore for more oil.

The rising anxiety over high gas prices has caused a shift in public priorities about the importance of exploring for new energy.

Almost six in 10 now say exploring for new sources of energy is more important than protecting the environment. People were evenly split on that question in 2002. Half now support drilling for oil and gas in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska ? up from 42 percent who felt that way in March.

Only four in 10 wanted to promote the increased use of nuclear power, while slightly more than half opposed that step.

The Pew poll of 1,523 adults was taken Sept. 8-11 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

If someone can afford to fill up their SUV then good for them... but if you own an SUV and complain about how much it costs to run it.. well then you are pretty silly for expecting gas prices to stay the same or go down

I really don't see why people like SUVs so much. Even when gas prices were low few years ago SUVs didn't apeal to me for some reason at all...

People said the same thing about muscle cars in the 1970's when that gas shortage happened. Get rid of the big engines and drive a tiny ride.

I drive a Duragno R-T with a 5.9 Magnum V-8 and wouldnt trade it in for the world. This gas shit will pass and the price will come down to $2.50 and sit there....

My advice... Buy an SUV while the bottom has fallen out of their market and sit on it... one day they will be worth a boatload... Just like the classic muscle cars are now

My wife loves her BMW X5 with the powerful 4.6 liter engine. I would rather deal with the high gas prices and the 14 MPG that vehicle makes then take that vehicle away from her....LOL I just have more to write off at the end of the year.

Buy a Ford Escape Hybrid !!!

I just got mine its a small SUV which is supposed to get 30-36 miles per gallon in town and around 30 on the freeways. In fact it gets around 26 on freeways which isn't too bad and beats most cars. I got it to hold all my Pro photo studio lights and stands as well as my cameras etc, which it does very well. Its quite fast on acceleration as both the electric and gas engine cut in together if you stamp on the peddle and will easily cruse at 80 no trouble.

Most people think hybrids are slow but just take one for a drive you will change your mind. The only bad thing about this car is its made by FORD and the local dealer in Mission valley is crap, when it went in recently to have the ignition switch changed ( engine would not switch off ) they covered the new leather sets with oil and grease marks. Fucking idiots didn't put plastic on them first.

If another car company brings out an SUV that does 30 plus MPG i will switch over , mainly because of the poor dealer service in San Diego.

that must mean 8 out of 10 people don't drive SUV's

                                    now heres my argument

fine tax the fuck out of SUV's, but leave them be, i need something to tow a boat with

and i'm betting my hybrid civic isn't going to pull a 20ft sea ray up a hill

The "green" SUVs are coming. Ford has a hybrid SUV and the Lexus RX is available in hybrid. I guess all the SUV haters will have to come up with another reason for not liking them.

LOL! I love it when others feel they have the need to tell people how to spend the money THEY EARNED.

I have an SUV, my last main car was an SUV (had a small truck too, which actually got worst mileage than the SUV), and my next car will be SUV.

I'm also going to take plane trips which uses up gas - eek!

I have an SUV, my last main car was an SUV (had a small truck too, which actually got worst mileage than the SUV), and my next car will be SUV.

I'm also going to take plane trips which uses up gas - eek!
Yup. They do it all the time, a famous one is the "Should Bill Gates be forced to give 75% of his $50B fortune to charity or the less fortunate?" poll. And these drones all vote 80% "Yes" lol.

You earn the money, you spend it on what you wish. That's the way it works in "free" society.

People were evenly split on that question in 2002. Half now support drilling for oil and gas in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska ? up from 42 percent who felt that way in March.

Well, that's ok. As the commercial says, the Arctic is full of cuddly little birds all covered with fluff that's perfect for soaking up oil spills. It's a natural choice.
