i always wondered how this works? You get them for free? and can u buy food with them everywhere or only at like homeless shelters or something?Originally posted by GatorBNo how is it obvious? If a fat person is poor it means they don't work which means they sit around all day. How do they buy food? Easy they're called FOOD STAMPS.Comment
-
Food stamps( actually is more like a debit card now not actual stamps anymore ) can be used at most grocery stores. Even Wal-Mart takes them.Originally posted by nico-ti always wondered how this works? You get them for free? and can u buy food with them everywhere or only at like homeless shelters or something?
You have to apply at you local human services office( or whatever it's called locally ) if you qualify wil depend on how much you make and if you have kids and how many. A single man with no job and no kids? Sorry you probally won't get food stamps. Also if you car is worth too much you can get turned down. So if you get laid off adn stil can't get work they tell you to sell your car for food first before they'll give you food stamps. Of course after you sell your car you can't get a job because you have no way to get to work, but that's our government for you.Comment

I wouldn't say pretty well. I certainly wouldn't be sastified with what you get with government handouts. And I'm not one that's into owning a lot of expensive shit or having a lot of things.Comment

Neither would I, but obviously a lot of people are. My point is that compared to what "poor" means to much of the world, U.S. welfare receipients have it pretty good.Originally posted by GatorBI wouldn't say pretty well. Last I heard the welfare system was just basically keeping a roof over your head and barely enough to eat..Fucking ridiculous assumptions if you think you can sit around and indulge yourself.Comment

unfortunately, they have it better then they should. they have no incentive to find a job when watching Oprah and drinking budweiser pays better. all welfare recipients should either find a job, goto school and take only classes that apply to a degree, or dig holes in a field all day to earn that money.Originally posted by escorpioNeither would I, but obviously a lot of people are. Well yeah. In the US being "poor" means only having basic cable. I don't mind helping peopel out, but it does irk me when peole that get food stamps and still smoke cigarettes. Oh so you are too poor to buy food but you can afford 2-3 packs a day at $2.50 a pack? I also don't like how you can buy chips, Coke and steak with food stamps. Chips and coke aren't healthy and if I can't afford steak you aren't getting any off my dime either.Originally posted by escorpioNeither would I, but obviously a lot of people are. I guess they could eat themselves into the poor houseComment

cigarettes are about $4.50 a pack. i could care less about the chips too. i get upset when i see people buying steaks and lobsters and brandname shit with foodstamps and then pulling out a wade of $100's to pay for the cigs and beer after arguing with the clerk who wont take foodstamps for them.Originally posted by GatorBWell yeah. From what I've heard, there are a number of people who will pay people on food stamps like .50ct on the dollar (around here) and that is how some of them buy things their assistance would not cover.
I recall about 10 years ago when the welfare system was a bit more rebust atleast in this state, where a good friend of the time's aunt used to get heckled everytime she would go to the grocery. We'd go over there after school sometimes (friend did errands for aunty) and she'd be bitching about someone making a remark like, "I wish I could get Pepsi and cigarettes like the welfare folk". I always thought it was priceless because of the amount of cigs, and pepsi they'd drink, and get all offended.
His "aunty" was a clear cut stereotype of what some of you are referring to. She was like 5' 3" or maybe 4". She weighed prolly a good 250 lbs if I had to guess as she weighed more than me, and I am 6'. Smoke, drank, watched TV all day. Had not worked in a good decade, and was on all kinds of pills for shit.
What a sad existance.Comment

Where I live you can get the cheap stuff for $2 a pack. My state has the 7th lowest tax on cigarettes, 20 cents. Drive 30 miles to the next state over and you can get them even cheaper, 3 cents per pack tax.Originally posted by bringercigarettes are about $4.50 a pack.Comment

In the US I am considered way under poverty level for how much $$$ I make. I have a 2 bedroom apt, a newer reliable car, a 43 inch high def tv, a kickass comp with a 20 inch lcd, surround sound, 350 dvds, a ps2 with 65 games, high speed internet, and a lot of other nice things and I still have a decent amount of money to spare each month. I am debt free and I am 22 years old with a high school education. "Poverty" is horrible. People need to learn to do things for themselves.Comment

These fast food restaurants aren't exactly cheap. You know you can buy a bag of rice and beans that will last you one week or more with the price of burger, fry and a coke.Originally posted by Webby
And poor people get fat from eating their cheap crap!Comment

Most had no education about eating healthy and really don't know how to budget the money they get. Fat food is cheaper. For 5.00 one can get a fatty meal that satisfied the stomach prepared.Originally posted by Alex from MontrealIMO It's just not possible to be poor and fat.
Eating healthy is expense. Broccoli where I live is 2.99 pound; lean chicken breast is 7.99 a pound, apples cost 1.99 pound, one lemon cost 75 cents and so on.
Probably the poor fat people are just eating the wrong foods to stay a live and know no better.

Wow there's a lot of ignorance in this thread!! Let me bring some logic into it though... I know it will evade some of you
It's possible that a lot of people are fat BECAUSE they are poor. Fattening food is a LOT cheaper than food that's good for you. 10 boxes of macaroni and cheese is a lot cheaper than lean chicken and fresh vegetables.Comment

Sure, eating healty can be expensive if you're picky and want to eat fresh food that are out of season, are not in your area or are in limited amount.Originally posted by SureFireEating healthy is expense. Why are poor people fat?Originally posted by Alex from MontrealAnd one bag of rice and beans is a bit cheaper than 10 box of non name macaroni and cheese but will last you as long if not more.
1) Because they lack the education to realize that if they ate healthier & excersized that maybe they would lose weight and not have to spend a nice chunk of their small paychecks on diabetes meds.
2) Because they have reached a point in life where they simply do not give a fuck. This is probably why they're on govt. assitance and aren't going anywhere in life, and most likely never will. Once again lack of education.
Some of you are so stupid that im surprised you haven't forgotten how to breathe.i buy massive xxx dating traffic.Comment

Eating healthy is expensive without being picky and most poor people don't have the education like the rich fat people. At least the poor people have an excuse.Originally posted by Alex from MontrealSure, eating healty can be expensive if you're picky and want to eat fresh food that are out of season, are not in your area or are in limited amount.
I find it odd that produce is more expensive than junk food.

While this may be true in the US. In other parts of the world, there are some college, even masteral graduates who find it difficult to find good jobs because there simply aren't any left. Because of this, no matter how much they try, they earn very small wages. They can't make ends meet.Originally posted by TehKinkyHotnessIn the US I am considered way under poverty level for how much $$$ I make. I doubt food stamps go very far. Cheap food = Lots of Carbs.
Not hard to understand why some poor people are fat.
Food stamps have helped countless people and I hope no one here ever needs them.Comment
