like personal checking or savings? I bet most people have under 1grand in savings and the same with checking. Most people aren't smart with their finances.

I read somewhere that the majority of the world lived paycheck to paycheck and that if you're keeping more than 500 in your account you'er better than most.

ya. 75% of the people I'm sure live paycheck to paycheck. I might not have a ton in my personal, but I keep it in my business account for tax purposes.

the average Americcan savings rate is now zero....

I bet the Europeans and esp. the Japanese tend to have a lot more saved...they are more disciplined

Average, I would suppose approx. 15 to 25% of their take home wages at any given time.

Certainly not $10k for the average person. More like $1k, if that. I'm happy not being average....

Most people live paycheck to paycheck and don't make enough to save. AVERAGE salary in the US is only 36k.

                                                http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:H...ient=firefox-a

That means the bi-weekly is around 1k or so give or take a few after taxes. That's not very much if you have bills to pay. Of course a lot of people make more but they are not the average.

Average person probably has 3-4 k at best I would guess.

A lot of my friends, (in their mid-late twenties) don't even have 3 or 4 k, and are more like living paycheck to paycheck or more like dollar to dollar.

When I had a 9-5 I was barely able to save ANYTHING after rent, bills, and then of course shopping.... I was only able to save once I started selling porn.

I agree that probably the average American has less than $1K. I would be a nervous wreck. One thing I started doing when the money came in was put at least 6 months worth of basic living expenses in a low interest (well, now it is...back in the late 90's it was high interest...) easily accessible account. You never know what's going to happen

There are obvious variances from country to country as well - the US lives on credit and the EU don't so much, but fast getting that way. Then ya got folks in countries who never ever had a bank account (but oddly, can be better off than some people in "civilized countries").

Hmmm I would have to agree with the fact that most average people live pay cheque to pay cheque and owe the banks. I am so greatful that I am debt free...took a long time to pay back student loans but I managed 18K over a few years, but it feels good to not owe anything. Well, I have one credit card and I pay that off in full each month or every two weeks.

Thus I still will go with my previous answer of 10-25% of any given paycheck at any given time, accounting for check floating and the like. Though technically it appears that many accounts are in a negative in reality if a paycheck was late, they got injured or had a large expense.

                                                                  Edit- couple quotes I found.

"a large proportion" of Americans are not saving and have never saved, Salisbury acknowledges. "That's largely a function of income . . . They're just barely managing to survive as it is, and they don't have enough income to save."

More than 70% said they worried about their finances in the last year, and two-thirds said that unexpected expenses -- things like the furnace breaking or the car needing to be fixed -- were the cause of that worry

When you say the "Average person" I would guess you are referring to the "masses". That being the case, I'd say little. Some might have a couple of grand, but I'd say they are the exception if a grunt working a 9-5 and prolly more a check to check person.

First job I got after college was with a telco. Depending on your education level and experience determined where you started on the "scale" (this was a union job). If you had a degree, and a lot of sale experience you started near the top ($50k), if not you were around $30k, but maxed out via contract in 5 years. With different sales incentives, you could easily make $75k.

Anyways, I remember when I was first hired in my trainer used to tell us over and again about not getting caught in the "golden handcuffs" because it would trap you in a job you did not like, unable to transfer or leave. Long story short, she was referring to getting used to making that much money, over spending, and so forth.

Anyways, I remember being stunned over my 6 years there that people would get paid on a Friday, and by the next Monday would be asking to borrow money. Ofcourse these would be the people with 3-5 kids, driving the brand new cars, and living in the houses they couldn't afford, etc, etc etc.

Now I am not saying $50k is like 100k or more and people can live like kings by any means if you have a family, kids, and the rest. But I mean where I am in MI, $50k can definately go a long way unless you have no money management skills.

A lot of these people had no money in the bank, and any time their cars broken down, or there was some emergency, there was drama. I know this because I was a union steward (i.e. privie to all their mellow dramas) for part of my time there, and would have to defend them to keep their job.

So the average person (being the masses) had no savings of any kind they contributed to anyways. The more intelligent normally had a couple of grand or more either in a bank, CD, stock market, investment of some sort.

                                                                              Should You Email Your Members?
