?
does this require some sort of cell phone merchant acct or what?

I've been looking for info on this as well. Theres always these commercials on "txt 1 to blah blah" to get your free daily horoscope.
Gotto be some info on setting that up.

Get an account with an SMS aggregator, such as
http://www.simplewire.com
,
http://mblox.com
, etc. Write your application to interface with the aggregator for the SMS campaign logic and you should be good to go.
Or something like that.

You could always try cutting deals with carriers, but they they probably wont give you the time of day if you're not millions

You can try the carriers directly but you probably won't get very far without large volume.
