Hell yeh, it was a monster fuckup on sooooo many levels, local and federal.
Did you see that Bill Maher show the other night, where he goes to mention all the shit we've lost during George's terms? Was a riot, went something along the lines of "We've lost almost all of our allies, 4 airlines, the surplus, 2 trade centers, and the city of New Orleans.....maybe you're just not LUCKY!"
Man that shit was sad and funny at the same time.
Might still be here:
http://www.execulink.com/~chrismccoy/newrules.wmv
And yes, the rebuilding of NO is a contractor's 'wet' dream (pardon the pun). Hopefully a lot of locals get in on that action, would be good for their economy to help shit get moving again.
But the chances of that happening are, well, probably not so good.

FEMA isn't useless, they're just not designed to help people. They're basically there in case the government ever needs to take over the US population militarily. That's why it's full of right wing security goons instead of humanitarian workers. They did a great job going in with troops and rounding up all the "looters", and they did a great job confiscating people's legally owned guns, they just aren't meant to give out food and save people. This is why Bush originally said to Nancy Poleski that FEMA did exactly what they were supposed to. If the poor blacks start to get all uppity FEMA will have them in concentration camps in a matter of hours.Comment

good point, I think what "fucked up" there was those that were put in charge were actually campaign supports and helpers for Bush. They had no experience and were flying blind. Bush knew that and did the right thing.
In addition from what I see and hear everyone including the mayor fucked up. Bush I have to give credit for taking responsibility though I am curious as to why so many millionaires are putting up huge chunks of cash - but you dont hear Bush or Cheney throwing any $$ towards the relief effort.
Overall, I am tired of the blame game and simply lets get on with helping these people and worry about who to point fingers at, because in all honestly - everyone in administration including the percentage of the police force who never showed up that day for work are to blame.Comment

I wonder if you will hear from the mayor that didn't bother to evacuate his city, the Parish leaders that didn't use the federal levy money to fix the levys, or the Govenor that failed to ask for federal support, admit any blame.
I doubt it..... they're democrats.
Instead of the Mayor carrying out the manditory evacuation plan and get the poor people out with city buses, he did NOTHING, then blamed it all on the Feds/Bush.
I wonder why people aren't accusing him of hating blacks and the poor? He left them there to die in the first place.
....and of the federal money sent to fix the levys 3 years ago, only 35% was used. Of that 35% that was used, it WASN'T even used on the levys, it was used on a fountain and the convention center.
And the governor, who must BY LAW formally invite the federal government to come in, waited for a couple of days to do so, I guess SHE must hate the blacks and the poor also.Michael Sperber / Acella Financial LLC/ Online Payment Processing

I agree, I am not Bush fan but it all starts at the local/state level per how our government is set up. It all falls on the smaller level first then federal level. I am glad Bush took blame for the Federal response but there also needs to be something done from the local and state government. It all starts there then federal kicks in.Comment

Plenty of them.
The Feds NEVER show up for days and days. EVERYTHING happens on the local level. The city and state take care of things, not the Feds.
The Governors from AL and MS were not on TV screaming that it was all the Feds fault and that bush hates blacks. They were getting on with doing what the state is supposed to do.
The only drivel is from people that didn't even pay enough attention in school to know how their own government works. Read the constitution some time. I would recomend starting with the 10th amendment, then do some searchs on states rights.

Agree, hope this taught everyone a lesson. I live in Florida and when Charley hit last year, there was supplies flown and trucked into the local airport a couple of days afterwards. I watched it and it is a major undertaking. I hope we can have some sort of staging areas pre-done for future hurricanes in prone areas.Comment

Of course the Federal government should take part of the blame, but the way the system works in the US, it is up to the local and state governments to be responsible for pre-storm evacuation, and first response. The fact that the local and state authorities are screaming that it's all about Bush and nothing about themselves is pathetic and dispicable.Originally posted by directfiestaSince Bush himself accepting the blame, what would it take for you to recignize that ???

Your blind hatred of Bush always amuses some of us on this board, as myself...But don't worry, this board IS your base, thank God(am I allowed to say that word in here?) the majority of the population in my country doesn't subscribe to your hippie-anti-everything views!
And Fiesta, I've been through a Category 4 hurricane, Hurricane Hugo split my house in half like a fucking Ginsu knife back in '89. It is ALWAYS the Governor's responsibility to declare state of emergencies and also issue the National Guard, and it is also the Mayor's duty to evacuate the cities and plan the appropriate transportations for those less fortunate. The governor refused Bush's plea to get everyone out of the area BEFORE the hurricane, and the Mayor left the buses to sit in the parking lots in floodwaters, meanwhile the people who were directed to the Superdome were left with no water no food, all thanks to 2 incompetent politicians who happen to be Democrats.
Was the government's response to blame? Well of course, if Bush admits it, you know something is fucked.. But your blind hatred for Republicans and President Bush makes you ignore the plain and simple facts; Louisiana's state officials and politicians have been corrupt and irresponsible since the beginning of their history, just do some research on where its previous governors are now living! (BTW, I know what I speak of, I lived in Hammond, Louisiana, everyone that has lived in that state for awhile is well aware of the corruption)
So to review, here is the order of blame:
1)Governor Blanco for so many fuckups beyond belief
2)Mayor Nagin for pointing the blame back to the Governor and the FEDS after the demise of New Orleans
and 3)Bush and the FEDS, for not realizing how incompetent its subordinates actually are in New Orleans, as well as the government's FEMA!
Or you could just ignore the facts, let the incompetent and corrupt leaders of Louisiana off completely, and blame it all on Bush! It's easier to do that isn't it children?
Hey look! I slipped on a banana peel, it's that goddamn Bush!!! He's so stupid!
waaaah
