WAKEMAN, Ohio - Sheriff?s deputies found 11 children locked in cages less than 3½ feet high inside a home, but a couple denied they had abused or neglected the children.

A judge on Monday put the children ? who range in age from 1 to 14 and who have various disabilities, including autism ? in foster homes.

The children were found in nine cages built into the walls of the house near this small city in northern Ohio, according to the Huron County Sheriff?s Office. They had no blankets or pillows, and the cages were rigged with alarms...

the foster care system in this country is one of the most terrible institutions around. it is over loaded, under funded, and poorly managed, and all at the exspense of the children. it's really sad to hear about things like this.

We went to adopt a dog at the local pound and they told us that not only would they come by to check on the dogs welfare a time or two that it was expected we keep the dog indoors for the most part. It was an 80 pound lab.

I mean this is some fucked up shit and since hearing this story on CNN my day is fucked. The foster parents and the bullshit doctor that told them to do that should be hung upside down by their toenails and beat with extension cords boiled in water.

I was in and out of foster homes in my childhood, and noone would ever believe how many of these families do it just for the benefits. Often times they use the yearly clothing, school and x-mas allowances for their own children. And favoritism would make punishments for the fostered children rather harsh at times, trust me... I am speaking from my own experiences. And look up on the numbers of children that are sexually abused in foster homes not only from other fostered children, but from the parents themselves and even other family members.

This is where your tax dollars are going.

It is hard to find foster parents who are really in it for the right reasons.

You can't blame the system. There are some sick people in the world, many live right here on domestic soil. This is a tragedy, those kids can hopefully find the courage and strength to rise above this.

I love America, but I don't blame our country for the problems of sick individuals. That said, I wouldn't be suprised if the Foster care system needed a revamping.

You say you can't blame the system, then you turn around and say you wouldn't be surprised if the system needed revamping. WTF?

I will say from experience that many foster families are NOT screened properly, foster homes are NOT inspected regularly, and ANYONE with a clean history can become foster parents. THAT is the system.

Now... when there is something going on, and a caseworker does follow up on the children, if things are said that could possibly taint the system in the communities eyes, then it goes overlooked. Often the children are blamed for the behaviour skills and when telling on the homes or the parents for any abusive action, the kid is traumatised or a liar or just making shit up cause they want to go home. EXACTLY like being in Jail. VERY FEW foster homes are legitimate as caring for the children properly and using the funds provided to them on the care they are provided for. Not to mention the ammount of money foster homes recieve for their own needs. Approx. $250 - $500 a month per child. Many homes have 3 children or more and both parents work good jobs.

I had foster parents, and you wouldn't believe how well they treated me.. Just about any thing I wanted I got.
They adopted me also... Really great people, can't say enough good things about them.

But seriously , of course you can blame the system. What kind of foster parent program doesn't check on foster parents homes to make sure they are adequate ? How many people could that take ?

Even if we had a million foster kids thats 3000 houses to check a day ( approx ) thats 100 employees checking 30 houses a day .. well within a reasonable amount. There are literally tens of THOUSANDS of foster program employees in the usa , way more than enough to do this task

I think the biggest problem is most crimes do not have fitting punishments. Not enough discouragement. But you also have to ask why people feel the need to do these things in the first place.

I may be playing devil's advocate here, and while it is wrong to make children sleep in cages, but reading those quotes above help put this all in perspective.

The kids were healthy, well dressed, polite, and were otherwise normal other then they sleep in a cage. I suppose that it would be less cruel to make them sleep on the floor?

And it does say that not all of them slept in cages, so that lends some credence to the quote saying that they kept some kids in cages for protection.

I don't want to say it's right what they did, but I will say that everyones reactions here seem to be way overblown.
