So im on the bus with my daughter (who's almost 3) and friend
and this fucking disgusting fat old bloke is gawking at her .. drool practically dripping from his chin ya know...
im talking to my friend and get a bit distracted - at which time this prick decides to take out his cell phone and sneak a few shots of babygirl.
My friend sees what he's up to and picks my daughter up and turns back on.

later it turns out the guy is staying in the same building as me ..
i'm 110% paranoid about kletting her out of my sight now and ive told the mom down the hallway to keep a close eye on her 3 daughters.

i've also invested in a baseball bat.

so my question is:
can anyone here tell me what is law in canada about taking pics of someone else's kid without permission?
where i come from its illegal to do this

I think I would call the local authorities and ask. NOt mention any specifics, just ask. Then if you find out its a punishible offense take the proper action. Till then keep the bat handy and warn others.

Here in the US, many states have sexual offender databases online that you can check in your zip code to find out if there are any sexual predators in your area... not sure if they have the same thing in Canada, but you should check with local law enforcement officials to see if such a thing exists.

Re-your daughter. While I wasn't there and obviously didn't see the guy, is it possible he just thought your daughter was "Cute" so took a picture with his new toy?

I'm not justifying his actions either, because if it was MY son or daughter, I'd ask him what the hell he was doing myself. But, it might not be fair to label the guy a pedo, just because he snapped a picture of a cute kid.

But definitely stay safe.

I don't think there are any laws about taking pics in a public aera. If I remember correctly, this was taken to the supreme court.

look its generally not an issue i let people take pics of my daughter quite often because she is just SO damn cute ...
everyone in the street stops to talk to her when they see her so cute with little dreadlocks lol

there is not law against taking pictures of someone in public - newspapers do it all the time. What is concerning and possible is to make a report about it so that it is on file for future reference should this be a pattern. Since you know hes in the building, then I would suggest going to your local police station to file a report giving your impressions. Likely that the police wont do a thing - but if you can at least get them to file a report stating that you feel your child is in danger they will make one.

Should this be a pattern of behaviour or it happens to someone else, they will gather the reports and use it to build a case in court that he has a history of such behaviour. If he is listed as a predator then he may be breaking his parole. Who knows.

DO NOT buy a bat or anything of that nature. No use going to jail for assault or worse and miss your kids birthday party.

MOST IMPORTANT: Teach your kids not to fear strangers but strange behaviour

you cant have them walking paranoid, and you also cant be there all the time.

If it were me, I'd just politely ask him why he is taking pics of my kids and see how he reacted, if it was shady in the least, then I'd worry. I have balls of steel though and don't care who I approach when it comes to my kids. BUT we can't just go assuming because someone with a camera is a pedo. I know in this day and age, that's what would first come to MY mind, but I'd have to suck it up and ask him, the last thing I'd ever ever want to do is drag some poor saps name thru the mud if he was just a photographer taking pics that he finds interesting.

Even if it is a child, some photographers specialize in that sort of thing and this doens't make them pedos, just makes them interested in the candidness they find in a child's face. I have a friend that is a photographer and some of his best pics are the candid ones, not the posed.. man, woman, child, still life, whatever.

So before you go making that guys life hell, PLEASE PLEASE just go knock on his door and calmly say something like "I noticed you taking pics of my little girl, and being the protective mom I am, I'd like to know why, if you don't mind".. and as a precaution, set the bat about a foot from you where he can't see it in case.. or take a friend with you. But making the guys life hell and alerting cops when it could have well been an innocent thing would ruin him for many years to come. I know you Kitty, and you'd never be able to live with yourself if you were the cause of that.

You CAN protect your baby AND show him the benefit of the doubt too, accusing someone of being a pedo is life ruining and can't be undone, so think about that.

Sure most of us with half a heart will smile at a cute kid. However would you take a photo of them? I wouldn't.

I took a photo of a little Amish boy the other day. So what?

You can't arrest people for taking candid shots in public places. Next thing you know someone is shooting a building with a kid in the picture and oops, prison time!

I'm thinking if this guy was a real pedo, he would have shot her in an inconspicuous manner and you wouldn't have even known he was doing it. I snapped several of a homeless man last week and I put the camera at my side to do it. If he was obvious about it, then he had nothing to hide.

But yeah, I'd be a little paranoid too if I were you. May want to find out more about this guy.

Taking pics of a kid on a cell phone without any prior conversation, is sketchy. When something like that happens I can see how you'd be shocked into silence, but have a plan of attack (not literally) for next time. Call 911, or if you are on public transit, let the bus driver know or hit the emerg button.
