I remember in college when it went up to 15 cents - it was an outrage - but they had to justify paying those guys to check your oil and wash your windshields while they were pumping your gas for you while you sat in the car
More importantly though - a sixpack of beer was right at $1 - so for $2 total you had the gas and the beer for the first hour
